The Effects of Stereoscopy on the Recognition of Patterns in Visual Noise

Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 1968
This paper reports the results of a study to determine if “noisy” visual patterns containing binocular disparity cues could be recognized more accurately than similar patterns with no disparity cues. To obtain a quantitative measure of this visual task three-dimensional patterns were employed based on the metric figures technique developed by Fills ...

Recognition By Components: A Theory Of Visual Pattern Recognition

1986
Publisher Summary This chapter describes recent research and theory on the human's ability to recognize visual entities. The fundamental problem of object recognition is that any single object can project an infinity of image configurations to the retina.

On-line recognition (OLREC): A novel approach to visual pattern recognition

Pattern Recognition, 1983
Abstract A pattern recognition system has been developed which is capable of recognizing high contrast two-dimensional visual patterns and which is insensitive to the translation, rotation and size of a pattern. The unique characteristics of the system are its speed, its low cost and the fact that it is completely self-contained. A new technique for

Visual pattern recognition with neural networks

1992
The “neocognitron” was first proposed as a hierarchical neural network model for the mechanism of visual pattern recognition in the brain. It is capable of deformation-resistant pattern recognition. Various experiments have demonstrated its powerful ability to recognize visual patterns.

Visual pattern based approach to object recognition

Proceedings of 1995 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems. The International Joint Conference of the Fourth IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and The Second International Fuzzy Engineering Symposium, 2002
We investigate a knowledge model for our previously proposed approach to object recognition based on low level pattern features. This knowledge includes rules which can deal with situations in which an object may be occluded. The approach is based on fuzzy logic techniques, appropriate when approximate recognition results are adequate.

Learning optimal features for visual pattern recognition

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
The optimal coding hypothesis proposes that the human visual system has adapted to the statistical properties of the environment by the use of relatively simple optimality criteria. We here (i) discuss how the properties of different models of image coding, i.e.

The effect of visual deprivation on pattern recognition in the rat

Developmental Psychobiology, 1979
AbstractIn 2 experiments the performances of light‐reared (LR) and dark‐reared (DR) 90‐day‐old rats were compared on a variety of transfer tests following acquisition of 3 pattern discriminations. Significant differences due to rearing condition were found in performance on a discrimination involving horizontal separations between pairs of vertical ...

Visual pattern based object recognition system

Proceedings of 1995 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems. The International Joint Conference of the Fourth IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and The Second International Fuzzy Engineering Symposium, 2002
We investigate a knowledge model for our previously proposed approach to object recognition based on low level pattern features (W. Zhang and A. Ralescu, 1994). This knowledge includes rules which can deal with situations in which an object may be occluded.

Mechanisms of Pattern Recognition by the Visual System of Insects

1973
During the past years investigations have been undertaken in our laboratory with the aim to determine and to analyze spontaneous preferences of flying houseflies (Musca domestica) for elementary patterns in their optical environment; Reichardt and Wenking (1969), Reichardt (1970), Reichardt (1971).
