Intracultural variation in the knowledge of medicinal plants in an urban-rural community in the atlantic forest from northeastern Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesEvid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2012
This study assessed the intracultural knowledge of the use of medicinal plants in an urban‐rural community in an Atlantic forest fragment in northeastern Brazil. We examined the importance of native and exotic species and the effects of gender and age on that knowledge.

Water and mineral composition of the exudate resulting from scarification of pau-pombo trees by black-tufted marmosets

open access: yesCiência e Natura, 2023
Black-tufted marmosets to obtain tree exudates for food often use Tapirira guianensis trees. Tree exudates are sources of calories, nutrients and water. In seasonal droughts, the high concentration of water in the exudates can be an immediate source for marmosets.

Island spider origins show complex vertical stratification patterns in Macaronesia

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 16, Issue 6, Page 886-895, November 2023., 2023
Introduced species did not seem to have either preference for the lower strata on the studied range or for strata lower than the ones occupied by indigenous. Native non‐endemic species tended to be arboreal and having higher vertical range than endemic and introduced species.

The carrying capacity of the seas and oceans for future sustainable food production: Current scientific knowledge gaps

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2023., 2023
Our study explores four alternative options open to increase marine food production: (1) manipulating the entire food web structure, (2) harvesting so far unexploited stocks, (3) low‐trophic mariculture of seaweeds and herbivorous animals, and (4) restoration of impoverished coastal ecosystems or artificially increasing productivity by ecological ...

Long‐term retention of golimumab treatment in clinical practice in a large cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis

open access: yesMusculoskeletal Care, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 189-197, March 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim To assess the golimumab retention rate during up to 8 years of follow up, and any associated factors. Methods Retrospective analysis of the BIOBADASER (Spanish registry of biological drugs) database, assessing all adults who had ever started golimumab >6 months before the analysis for an approved indication (rheumatoid arthritis [RA ...

Acanthopagrus oconnorae, a new species of seabream (Sparidae) from the Red Sea

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 101, Issue 4, Page 885-897, October 2022., 2022
Abstract A new species of sparid fish, Acanthopagrus oconnorae, is described based on 11 specimens collected in the shallow (0–1 m depth) mangrove‐adjacent sandflats of Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: second anal‐fin spine 12.8%–16.6% of standard length (SL); 3½ scale

Habitat filtering and inferred dispersal ability condition across‐scale species turnover and rarity in Macaronesian island spider assemblages

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 48, Issue 12, Page 3131-3144, December 2021., 2021
Abstract Aim Habitat diversity has been linked to the diversity and structure of island communities, however, little is known about patterns and processes within habitats. Here we aim to determine the contributions of habitat type and inferred dispersal frequency to the differences in taxonomic structure between assemblages in the same island habitat ...
