Public Perceptions of the Midwest\u27s Pavements: Explaining the Relationship Between Pavement Quality and Driver Satisfaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A three-phase study involving focus groups and sample surveys was conducted in three Midwestern states to assess the amount of satisfaction that motorists who drive on rural, two-lane state highways have with the pavement characteristics of those ...

Opportunistic sensing for road pavement monitoring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Road surface state monitoring is of main concern for road infrastructure owners. Hence dedicated measurement campaigns using laser scanning and image analysis are performed on a regular basis. Yet, this type of monitoring comes at a high labor cost

Connected Vehicle Approach for Pavement Roughness Evaluation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Infrastructure Systems, 2014
AbstractConnected vehicles present an opportunity to monitor pavement condition continuously by analyzing data from vehicle-integrated position sensors and accelerometers. The current practice of characterizing and reporting ride quality is to compute the international roughness index (IRI) from elevation profile or bumpiness measurements. However, the

Novel Functional Materials via 3D Printing by Vat Photopolymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective systematically analyzes strategies for incorporating functionalities into 3D‐printed materials via Vat Photopolymerization (VP). It explores the spectrum of achievable functionalities in recently reported novel materials—such as conductive, energy‐storing, biodegradable, stimuli‐responsive, self‐healing, shape‐memory, biomaterials, and

Carbon Contacts to Proteins Enable Robust, Biocompatible Electronic Junctions with Near‐Activation‐less Conduction Down to 10 K

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A robust solid‐state protein junction with a semi‐transparent eC/Au electrode allows photoexcitation of the bacterio‐rhodopsin, bR layer, to isomerize the bR retinal. The resulting photo‐response shows the protein is functional in the solid‐state junction.

Molecularly Engineered Highly Stable Memristors with Ultra‐Low Operational Voltage: Integrating Synthetic DNA with Quasi‐2D Perovskites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molecularly engineered memristors integrating Ag nanoparticle–embedded synthetic DNA with quasi‐2D halide perovskites enable ultra‐low‐operational voltage, forming‐free resistive switching, and record‐low power density. This synergistic integration of customized DNA and 2D OHP in bio‐hybrid architecture enhances charge transport, reduces variability ...

Development of a Relationship between Pavement Condition Index and Riding Quality Index on Rural Roads: A Case Study in China

open access: yesMathematics
The current standard for evaluating road conditions worldwide relies primarily on the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and the International Roughness Index (IRI). The IRI can be further calculated to obtain the Riding Quality Index (RQI).

4D‐Printable Poly(Thio)urethane Photoresins With Reactive Oxygen Species Responsiveness and Anti‐Inflammatory Functionality

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces UV‐curable poly(thio)urethane (PSU) thermosets as 4D printable scaffolds responsive to oxidative stress. PSU networks with 100 wt.% polypropylene glycol (PPG) effectively suppress inflammatory markers in microglial cells to basal values.
