To moo or to mow: Disentangling the effects of management on Gladiolus imbricatus in coastal meadows

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April–June 2026.
The rare grassland species Gladiolus imbricatus prefers mowing and mulching over grazing. Species' life stages provide a valuable indicator for its' abundance. Mowing date and grazing intensity are important factors in selecting a management in grassland restoration.

“Hidden” Landscape of Prehistoric Burial Monuments: The Use of Remote Sensing in the Detection of Neolithic Long Barrows in Bohemia (Czech Republic)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 475-497, April/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Neolithic long barrows are among the earliest monumental structures in Europe, yet in many parts of Central Europe their surface expression has been largely erased by long‐term agricultural activity. This study evaluates the potential of integrated remote sensing approaches for identifying and contextualizing long barrows and associated ...

The mulch dilemma: Trade‐offs between soil water conservation and microirrigation water retention

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, Volume 118, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract Mulching is widely used worldwide to reduce soil water evaporation, but it can also intercept and retain rain or irrigation water, limiting infiltration into the soil and thereby altering the soil water balance. Microsprinkler irrigation in dwarf coconut orchards applies water in small, frequent doses, producing shallow, near‐surface wetting ...

Higher cutting frequency can restore semi‐natural habitat quality on farmland

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 11, Page 3105-3114, November 2025.
Rather than productivity per se, the cover of dominant plant species drives plant species richness. Breaking the dominance of these species through defoliation can restore the species richness of the vegetation. Because dominant plant species can tolerate more defoliations at higher productivity, the number of times a vegetation needs to be cut to ...

Toposequences of Forest Soil Properties Between Differently Elevated Igneous and Sedimentary Mountain Ranges

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Soil Science, Volume 76, Issue 6, November–December 2025.
ABSTRACT Soil properties are significantly, but unevenly, conditioned by the landscape relief and/or bedrock. Here, we compare forest soil properties along toposequences between differently elevated areas of denuded Variscan mountain ranges and the alpine‐fold Carpathians in the Czech Republic (Central Europe). Correlating soil properties were selected

Role of Polyamines in Mitigating Salinity Stress in Ornamental and Food Crops

open access: yesPhysiologia Plantarum, Volume 177, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
ABSTRACT Soil and irrigation salinity continue to have a major impact on the world's agriculture and horticulture, and loss of plant production is likely to worsen with global warming and climate change. Efforts to mitigate salinity stress and breed better salt‐tolerant plants rely on our knowledge of plant response to abiotic stress at the ...

Comparative Analysis of Pasture Composition: DNA Metabarcoding Versus Quadrat‐Based Botanical Surveys in Experimental Grassland Plots

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
DNA metabarcoding offers a scalable alternative to traditional botanical surveys for monitoring plant community composition under different management regimes in experimental grassland plots. Comparing quadrat surveys and DNA metabarcoding, we found both methods identified key species and showed higher species diversity in cut versus grazed plots. This

Ecological Implications of Germination Temperature on Native and Invasive Rumex Spp.

open access: yesPlant-Environment Interactions, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Rumex alpinus L. (R. alpinus) is a non‐native invasive plant in Czech mountain regions, altering ecosystem structure and function in protected areas. Rumex obtusifolius L. (R. obtusifolius) is a native species and a problematic weed in Czech meadows, while Rumex longifolius DC. (R.
