The symbiotic fungus Paxillus involutus serves a critical role in maintaining forest ecosystems, which are carbon sinks of global importance. P. involutus produces involutin and other 2,5-diarylcyclopentenone pigments that presumably assist in the ...

Up to now, regulation of iron homeostasis by metabolites has rarely been characterized. Moreover, no excretory mechanisms for iron in fungi have been reported. In this study, we found that Thermomyces dupontii can accumulate a large amount of anthraquinones under cold stress.

Responses of ectomycorrhizal fungi to changes in carbon and nutrient availability [PDF]
Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi may receive 20% of the total C fixed by their host plants and are essential components of host nutrient acquisition. As a consequence of the vast physiological diversity that exists among ECM fungi, changes in community ...

Spruce and pine utilization of phosphorus in soil amended with 33P‐labelled hydroxylapatite
Abstract Mined rock phosphate is expected to become a scarce resource within the next few decades as global phosphorus (P) deposits are declining. As a result, mineral P fertilizer will be less available and more expensive. Therefore, improved knowledge is needed on other P resources, for example, apatite fertilizers derived from the by‐products of ...

Diversity and evolution of ABC proteins in mycorrhiza-forming fungi [PDF]
Background: Transporter proteins are predicted to have an important role in the mycorrhizal symbiosis, due to the fact that this type of an interaction between plants and fungi requires a continuous nutrient and signalling exchange.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi integrate nitrogen mobilisation and mineral weathering in boreal forest soil
Summary Tree growth in boreal forests is driven by ectomycorrhizal fungal mobilisation of organic nitrogen and mineral nutrients in soils with discrete organic and mineral horizons. However, there are no studies of how ectomycorrhizal mineral weathering and organic nitrogen mobilisation processes are integrated across the soil profile.

Abstract This essay argues for design as an expression of analytic rigour and ethical commitment. It explores what it might mean to ‘write’ in collaboration with the entities and forces from Country, ancestors, oceans, soil, honeyeaters, sound, wild bores, frogs, fire, ash, sand, trees, and echoes, to colour, code, bitrates, cameras, computers, and ...

Tree diversity and species identity effects on soil fungi, protists and animals are context dependent [PDF]
Plant species richness and the presence of certain influential species (sampling effect) drive the stability and functionality of ecosystems as well as primary production and biomass of consumers. However, little is known about these floristic effects on
