Modeling of the Machining Process by PCBN Tool with Self-adaptive Coating

2021
The paper discusses the analytical calculation’s results of the effect of the self-adaptive coating on such parameters of the contact interaction at the cutting zone as average contact temperature and cutting force during machining of hardened steel with PCBN. The calculation procedure was realized in the form of an iteration algorithm.

Diffusion and oxidation wear of PCBN tool based on thermodynamics

Journal of Wuhan University of Technology-Mater. Sci. Ed., 2010
The rules of diffusion wear and oxidation wear for PCBN cutting tools were analyzed based on thermodynamics theory. Dissolution concentrations in typical normal workpice materials of PCBN tool material at different temperature were then calculated. Diffusion reaction rules in high temperature were developed and analyzed using the Gibbs free energy ...

On machining of hardened AISI D2 steel with PCBN tools

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2006
Abstract This paper describes an experimental investigation on machining of a difficult-to-cut material, AISI D2 steel of hardness 62 HRC with PCBN tools. It was found that the most feasible feeds and speeds fall in the ranges 0.08–0.20 mm/rev and 70–120 m/min, respectively and that most of the tested PCBN tools reached the end of life mainly due to ...

Machining Abrasion-Resistant Hard-Facings with Pcbn Tools

2002
Iron-based hard-facings are a popular choice for abrasion resistant materials in industries as diverse as mining and food processing. Alloys forming chromium carbides dispersed in a relatively soft matrix are particularly effective because these carbides are usually present as relatively large micro-constituents, which present large surface areas to ...

Reducing Fracture Tendencies in PCBN FSW Tools

2009
Abstract : The overall goal of this program is to increase the life of PCBN tools in friction-stir welding of high temperature metals. This will be achieved through the following objectives: (1) Understand the fundamental causes for limited lifetimes of PCBN tools during Friction-Stir Welding (FSW) of high temperature metals, including both wear and ...

Effects of Additives and CBN Grit Size on the Machinability of PCBN Tools

Materials Science Forum, 2006
An investigation was reported on how to improve the machinability of PCBN tool for realizing the electric spark line cutting of PCBN tool. The machinability of the PCBN tool was evaluated in terms of its current conductivity. The influences of the additive compositions, additive concentrations and grit sizes of CBN on the current conductivity of PCBN ...

Optimizing PCBN cutting tool performance in hard turning

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008
Surface finish, in addition to tool wear, is an important aspect of PCBN tool performance in hard turning. A set of experiments that focused on the effects of corner radius, chamfer angle/width, and edge radius in addition to severity of interruption and speed/feed at constant depth of cut were performed.

Cutting temperatures in hard turning chromium hardfacings with PCBN tooling

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2004
Abstract Hard turning of high chromium hardfacing materials is a new application field for PCBN tools. An investigation of the cutting temperature is essential in understanding the machining mechanism of the material, thus to improve the process efficiency.

Application of PCBN tools in the machining of iron-based hard-facings

International Journal of Machining and Machinability of Materials, 2006
In this work, the performance of a PCBN tool when turning a welded hard-facing material is reported in comparison with that of alternative materials, such as whisker-reinforced alumina in field trials. The chip formation process and tool wear modes were studied and suitable machining parameters were determined by cutting tests.
