Diffusion and oxidation wear of PCBN tool based on thermodynamics

Journal of Wuhan University of Technology-Mater. Sci. Ed., 2010
The rules of diffusion wear and oxidation wear for PCBN cutting tools were analyzed based on thermodynamics theory. Dissolution concentrations in typical normal workpice materials of PCBN tool material at different temperature were then calculated. Diffusion reaction rules in high temperature were developed and analyzed using the Gibbs free energy ...

Modeling of the Machining Process by PCBN Tool with Self-adaptive Coating

2021
The paper discusses the analytical calculation’s results of the effect of the self-adaptive coating on such parameters of the contact interaction at the cutting zone as average contact temperature and cutting force during machining of hardened steel with PCBN. The calculation procedure was realized in the form of an iteration algorithm.

Optimizing PCBN cutting tool performance in hard turning

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008
Surface finish, in addition to tool wear, is an important aspect of PCBN tool performance in hard turning. A set of experiments that focused on the effects of corner radius, chamfer angle/width, and edge radius in addition to severity of interruption and speed/feed at constant depth of cut were performed.

Cutting temperatures in hard turning chromium hardfacings with PCBN tooling

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2004
Abstract Hard turning of high chromium hardfacing materials is a new application field for PCBN tools. An investigation of the cutting temperature is essential in understanding the machining mechanism of the material, thus to improve the process efficiency.

Machining Abrasion-Resistant Hard-Facings with Pcbn Tools

2002
Iron-based hard-facings are a popular choice for abrasion resistant materials in industries as diverse as mining and food processing. Alloys forming chromium carbides dispersed in a relatively soft matrix are particularly effective because these carbides are usually present as relatively large micro-constituents, which present large surface areas to ...

PCBN tool wear modes and mechanisms in finish hard turning

Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing, 2007
The use of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) cutting tools in hard turning applications is continuously growing with the number of commercially available grades increasing, allowing new application areas to be explored. In order to take full advantage of the benefits offered by PCBN it is necessary to understand the behaviour of the material ...

Reducing Fracture Tendencies in PCBN FSW Tools

2009
Abstract : The overall goal of this program is to increase the life of PCBN tools in friction-stir welding of high temperature metals. This will be achieved through the following objectives: (1) Understand the fundamental causes for limited lifetimes of PCBN tools during Friction-Stir Welding (FSW) of high temperature metals, including both wear and ...

Machinability of Abrasion Resistance Cast Iron with PCBN Cutting Tools

Materials and Manufacturing Processes, 2008
Highly abrasion and erosive resistance materials are an important group of materials and has very wide applications in many industrial areas. The characteristic properties for this material include the castability and the superior wear resistance. The material, however, is in the group of hard-to-machine materials due to its abrasion to cutting tool ...

To the Question of the Mechanism of the Effect of Coating on the Durability of Tools from PCBN

2020
The paper discusses the results of the tool-life tests of PCBN cutting tool with PVD coating and the mechanism which could be accounted for declining of its wear rate. The results of research showed that in condition of finishing of hardened steel (52–54 HRC), PCBN with (TiAlSiY)N/CrN PVD coating demonstrated significantly lower wear rate parameter in ...
