The inhibitory surface receptor programmed cell death protein 1 (PD1) is a major target for antibody-based cancer immunotherapies. Nevertheless, a substantial number of patients fail to respond to the treatment or experience adverse effects.

Biochemical identification and characterization of PD1 signaling components

In the tumor microenvironment many strategies are at work to dampen T cell activation, allowing tumor immune escape. Among these, there is the stimulation of the co-inhibitory receptor PD1 on T cells by its ligand, PDL1, which is expressed on tumor cells.
