Modeling of Cutting Rock: From PDC Cutter to PDC Bit—Modeling of PDC Bit

SPE Journal, 2021
Summary In this paper, we integrated our polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter model (Chen et al. 2021) into a PDC bit model that can predict the weight on bit (WOB), torque on bit (TOB), and imbalanced side force on a bit under given drilling conditions.

PDC Bit Dynamics

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 1992
ABSTRACT The poor performance of PDC bits in harder formations is caused by downhole vibrations. However, proper operating conditions (i.e. low rotary speed and high weight on bit) and new technology for vibration control (anti-whirl PDC bits and a soft-torque rotary system) can successfully extend the application of PDC bits to harder ...

Modeling of Cutting Rock: From PDC Cutter to PDC Bit—Modeling of PDC Cutter

SPE Journal, 2021
Summary The main purpose of this paper is to present our polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter model and its verification. The PDC cutter model we developed is focused on a PDC cutter cutting a rock in 3D space. The model studies the forces between a cutter and a rock and applies the theory of poroelasticity to calculate the ...

Flexible Bit: A New Anti-Vibration PDC Bit Concept

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1995
ABSTRACT This paper introduces the novel concept of a "flexible" polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit, and its capability to reduce detrimental vibration associated with drag bits. The tilt flexibility, introduced at the bit, decouples the dynamic motion of the bottom hole assembly (BHA) from that of the bit, thus providing a ...

Microwave PDC Drill Bit

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
On the rotary drilling system, the technologies for fracturing and cutting hard rock are mainly mechanical rock breaking methods by use of improving bottomhole water horse power and bit energy, and the working life and rock breaking efficiency have much room for improvement.

Bit Balling Mitigation in PDC Bit Design

IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology Conference and Exhibition, 2008
Abstract Historically, parameters like junk slot area (JSA), face volume (FV) and hydraulic horsepower per square inch of bit area (HSI) have been used to empirically predict the balling performance of drill bits. These performance gauges, however, generally produce inconsistent results. This paper presents new design features, guided by

Hydraulic Optimization of PDC Bits

European Petroleum Conference, 1990
ABSTRACT The aim of our work is to improve the understanding of flow distribution and determine the optimum set of hydraulic design parameters that favour the drilling fluid circulation, with both computations and experiments. Once a new bit design has been defined according to these criteria, field tests will be done for a final ...

Coiled-Tubing Drilling With Specialized PDC Bits

Proceedings of SPE/IADC Drilling Conference, 1994
abstract The ability to effectively use any technology depends on how well it is understood. This condition becomes even more important with emerging technologies, as is Coiled Tubing Drilling (CTD). This paper will define the components of CTD as a "system" (Coiled Tubing Unit-Downhole Motor-Bit), and show that the understanding of the ...
