Modeling of Cutting Rock: From PDC Cutter to PDC Bit—Modeling of PDC Cutter

SPE Journal, 2021
Summary The main purpose of this paper is to present our polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter model and its verification. The PDC cutter model we developed is focused on a PDC cutter cutting a rock in 3D space. The model studies the forces between a cutter and a rock and applies the theory of poroelasticity to calculate the ...

Experimental Investigation into Mixed Tool Cutting of Granite with Stinger PDC Cutters and Conventional PDC Cutters

Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2021
The Stinger PDC cutter has superior impact resistance, wear resistance, and rock-breaking efficiency compared to the conventional PDC cutter. Thus, hybrid PDC bits that combine conventional and Stinger PDC cutters have significant advantages in drilling hard, interbedded, and highly abrasive rocks.

Modeling of Cutting Rock: From PDC Cutter to PDC Bit—Modeling of PDC Bit

SPE Journal, 2021
Summary In this paper, we integrated our polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter model (Chen et al. 2021) into a PDC bit model that can predict the weight on bit (WOB), torque on bit (TOB), and imbalanced side force on a bit under given drilling conditions.

Comparative analysis cutting characteristics of stinger PDC cutter and conventional PDC cutter

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2020
Abstract The Stinger PDC cutter has a better performance than the conventional PDC cutter drilling for hard, interbedded and highly abrasive rocks. Although researchers have investigated the cutter's characteristic, such as impact resistance, wear resistance and cutter's life, the cutting behaviors of the Stinger PDC cutter still remains unclear.

Advanced Coating to Mitigate PDC Cutter Thermal Degradation in PDC Bit Manufacturing

International Petroleum Technology Conference, 2022
Abstract Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutters on PDC drill bits are the primary cutting elements to shear and scrape the formations during drilling process. In the PDC drill bit manufacturing, PDC cutters are attached onto drill bit with silver-copper-zinc alloys by brazing process.

Effect of Cutter Shape on the Resistance of PDC Cutters Against Tip Impacts

SPE Journal, 2022
Summary Under harsh downhole conditions, the quasibrittle characteristics of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters are a serious drawback, which readily causes the cutters’ premature failure under impact loads. Innovating 3D cutter shapes is an effective solution for optimizing the cutter’s interaction with the rock and improving

Failure characteristics of rocks subjected to PDC cutter indentation

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2021
Abstract Indentation of rocks by the Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutter has great impacts on the cutting depth. However, a vast majority of previous studies only focused on the rock cutting process. Further insight into the failure characteristics of rocks subjected to PDC cutter indentation is required to optimize the design of PDC bits ...

Study on integrated effect of PDC double cutters

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2019
Abstract This paper studies the integrated effect of double cutters on cutting rock. The rock being cut is subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Double cutters paralleled to each other and separated with a distance are advancing in the same direction and removing rock materials over constant depths of cut.

Shale bedding planes control rock removal behaviors of PDC cutter: Single cutter experiment

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2020
Abstract Shale bedding planes arise with the complexity of rock removal by the PDC cutters. A series of single cutter experiments were conducted to understand the effects of bedding planes of shale on chip formation behaviors. Six bedding inclinations were taken into account by recording the variation of cutting force, cutting size, topography of ...

Unique Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) Cutter Improves Drilling Efficiency

Latin American and Caribbean Petroleum Engineering Conference, 1999
Abstract Advancements in Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutter technology1 have boosted the development and performance of PDC bits. In establishing their contributions to PDC bit performance, cutters have primarily been evaluated in terms of their resistances to impact and abrasion.
