Size effect of mechanical properties of granite under cyclic impact loading

open access: yesShuili Shuiyun Gongcheng Xuebao, 2020
In order to explore the size effect of cycling dynamic characteristics of rock, the cyclic impact tests for the granite specimens with height-diameter ratios of 1.00, 0.76 and 0.50 are carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar, and the testing ...

Early peak height velocity and cardiovascular disease mortality among Icelandic women

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine, 2013
Early pubertal onset among girls has been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. We examined whether timing of peak height velocity (PHV), an early marker of maturity, was associated with CVD mortality. We analysed 973 Icelandic women, born 1921-1935, with annual childhood growth measures from ages 8-13 years, recruited into the ...

A Novel Approach to Estimate the Transition Temperature via Dynamic Nanoindentation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A new dynamic nanoindentation‐based method was developed that uses the stiffness ratio as an indicator of the elastic–plastic deformation contributions at different temperatures. The approach successfully identified transition temperatures in ferritic steel and distinguished them from continuously ductile austenitic steel.

Associations of height, leg length, and lung function with cardiovascular risk factors in the Midspan Family Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
<b>Background</b>: Taller people and those with better lung function are at reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Biological mechanisms for these associations are not well understood, but both measures may be markers for early life ...

3D‐Printed Titanium Gyroid Scaffold Structure Integrated With Tough Hybrid Materials for Cartilage Replacement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes a potential device design for joint cartilage replacement. Silica‐polytetrahydrofuran (SiO2‐PolyTHF) hybrids with customizable mechanical properties were developed to mimic the characteristics of a natural meniscus. These were synthesized through a two‐pot sol–gel hybrid process.

The Role of Ultra‐Thin Passive Films and Organic Adsorbates on Aluminum Chips for a Friction‐Induced Solid‐State Recycling Process

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Despite benefits to storage stability and handleability of aluminum scrap, octadecyl phosphonic acid (ODPA) SAMs reduce the tensile strength of wires produced using friction‐induced recycling. Etching and methyl diphosphonic acid (MDPA) coatings, however, have little effect.

Sex- and Sport-Specific Differences in Jump Strategies: Key Qualities for Jump Performance

open access: yesSports
This study investigated countermovement jump (CMJ) strategies among NCAA Division 1 athletes and explored key variables associated with jump height. A total of 69 athletes (38 male, 31 female) from basketball and volleyball teams completed three or more ...

Composites of Shellac and Silver Nanowires as Flexible, Biobased, and Corrosion‐Resistant Transparent Conductive Electrodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Shellac, a centuries‐old natural resin, is reimagined as a green material for flexible electronics. When combined with silver nanowires, shellac films deliver transparency, conductivity, and stability against humidity. These results position shellac as a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymers for transparent conductors in next‐generation ...

Growth of schoolchildren with early, average and late ages of peak height velocity

open access: yesAnnals of Human Biology, 1978
A sample of Swedish urban schoolchildren (357 girls, 373 boys) born in 1954/55 followed from 10 to 18 years were grouped according to peak height velocity age (PHV age) into early, average and late maturers. Mean heights differed between the maturity groups at ages from 10.0 to 14.0 years for girls and 10.5 to 17.0 years for boys. Mean weights differed

DNA‐Templated 2D Heterostructures as Phototriggered Dynamic Nanohybrids: From Releasing Molecular Loads to Controlling Enzyme Biocatalytic Function

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DNA strands are employed both as dynamic linkers and nanoscale templates for the integration of Ag2S nanoparticles on MoS2, which in turn imparted photothermal responsiveness; this feature permits the selective cargo (fluorophore, quantum dots or an enzyme) release from the MoS2 surface in response to local heat induced by light irradiation.
