Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

Measured Wave Characteristics in Pearl River Estuary under Typhoon Impact

open access: yesRenmin Zhujiang, 2023
The nearshore wave environment of the Pearl River Estuary is significantly affected by typhoons.Based on the buoy observation data in Macao waters of the Pearl River Estuary, wave characteristic parameters (wave height, wave direction, wave period, etc.) and

Ecological risk assessment of aquatic organisms induced by heavy metals in the estuarine waters of the Pearl River

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
With the rapid economic development of China's coastal areas and the growth of industry and population, the problem of heavy metal contamination in estuarine waters is increasing in sensitivity and seriousness.

Bisphenol A alternatives continuously contribute to the endocrine disruption in cetaceans

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
The bans on bisphenol A (BPA) have facilitated the widespread use of BPA alternatives and shifted environmental contamination profiles of bisphenols (BPs).

Deepening Economic Development Through Market Access: Evidence From Navigational Channel Regulation Works

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Inland waterways are vital for facilitating market access and promoting economic development worldwide. This paper explores this relationship by examining the impact of navigational channel regulation works on the Yangtze River mainstream, China's longest inland waterway.

Extraordinary methane levels in a small bar‐built tropical estuary

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 4, July 2026.
Abstract Small estuaries link uplands and nearshore marine environments but are understudied in many regions. We quantified spatial and temporal variability in CH4, CO2, nutrients, and organic matter in a small, deep, bar‐built tropical estuary in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.

The Impact of Nocturnal Boundary Layer Height on Daytime Surface Particulate Nitrate Increases by Vertical Transport From the Residual Layer

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 11, 16 June 2026.
Abstract Particulate nitrate (pNO3−) has become a critical air‐quality issue, with pronounced morning increases in surface concentrations attributed to downward transport from upper layer. However, how the nocturnal boundary layer evolution modulates this process remains unclear.

Study on the design wave on the artificial island of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge while considering the extreme weather: I: selection method of the typhoon track in numerical wave simulation

open access: yesShui kexue jinzhan, 2019
Numerical wave simulation under hypothetical typhoon conditions has a pivotal role in the risk assessment of cross-sea bridges and tunnels. The wind-field generation and the adverse track selection have a large influence on the wave simulation results ...

Impacts of morphological change and sea-level rise on stratification in the Pearl River Estuary

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Pearl River Delta (PRD), where several megacities are located, has undergone drastic morphological changes caused by anthropogenic impact during the past few decades.
