Balancing mechanics and metabolism: Elevational variation in the microanatomy of hummingbird flight muscle

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Factors varying along elevational gradients impose strong aerodynamic and physiological constraints on powered flight, yet the internal microanatomical variation associated with elevational context in animals under such conditions remains poorly understood.

Dual Functions of Dietary Rubber Seed Oil Supplementation: Enriching N‐3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Enhancing Antioxidant Capacity in Pekin Ducks

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Dietary RSO supplementation improved growth performance, simultaneously enriched n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n‐3 PUFA), and enhanced antioxidant capacity in Pekin ducks, which suggested that RSO has the potential to be a novel n‐3 PUFA source and an antioxidant for Pekin ducks to generate animal functional foods.

Reduction of Ribonucleotide Reductase Subunit RRM2 Potentially Impairs Gut Function of Woody Breast Broilers

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Woody breast compromises meat quality leading to reduced consumer appeal. Although its causes are unclear, improvements observed with certain dietary supplements suggest that gut health may influence woody breast development. Ribonucleotide reductase subunit RRM2 is vital for mitochondrial function and gastrointestinal integrity, and alteration in its ...

Surface Electromyographic Activity of Shoulder Muscles among People with Type 2 Diabetes- A Case-control Study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2019
Introduction: Increased prevalence of shoulder dysfunction among people with diabetes is a recognised source of disability resulting in functional impairments. Metabolic perturbations in diabetes result in glycosylation and microvascular abnormalities in

Sonographic examination of respiratory muscles in chronic obstructive lung disease and evaluation of the relationship with clinical severity of exacerbation

open access: yesNorthwestern Medical Journal, 2022
Aim: This study aimed to sonographically examine the fraction of thickening in the respiratory muscles during the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to determine its relationship with the clinical severity of the ...

Fasting and Refeeding Mediated Phospholipid Remodeling Plays an Important Role in Improving Meat Quality of Aged Laying Hens

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explored fasting‐induced physiological remodeling effects on meat quality in aged laying hens. Fasting for 15 days (F15) significantly reduced abdominal fat, intermuscular fat width, subcutaneous fat thickness, and liver index versus pre‐fasting (F0) (p < 0.05), which recovered post‐refeeding.

Analysing the Curvature of the Pectoralis Muscle in Mammograms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
One of the most important criteria considering the assessment of the diagnostic quality in mammograms is the pectoralis muscle. In this paper a routine that automatically analysis the shape of the muscle and compute measurements needed to determine the quality concerning the muscle is presented. The method is based on a division of the musele in to sub

Arthroscopic Bicortical Biceps Anchorage: An Arthroscopic‐Assisted Technique for Subpectoral Biceps Tenodesis

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques, EarlyView.
Abstract Long head of the biceps tendon pathology is a frequent cause of anterior shoulder pain. Tenotomy is technically simple but may lead to cosmetic deformity and muscle cramping, whereas tenodesis better preserves the biceps contour but involves a more complex procedure. Multiple surgical techniques and fixation methods are available.

Carcass characteristics, chemical composition, physicochemical properties, texture, and microstructure of meat from spent Pekin ducks

open access: yesPoultry Science, 2020
The aim of the study was to compare P33 (Polish Pekin), P8 (Danish Pekin), and LsA (English Pekin) ducks after 2 reproductive seasons for carcass composition and some meat quality traits.
