Peculiarities of binary galaxies
Nature, 1980A recent analysis of a sample of close binary galaxies1 by White and Valdes2 has revealed some peculiar features: in particular, they tend to be brighter than field galaxies. Binary galaxies are important because the relative simplicity of the two-body problem in dynamics should make it possible to obtain good estimates of the masses of paired galaxies.

Electrographic and spectroscopic observations have been obtained of the peculiar galaxy NGC 523. The observations suggest that the pecularities of the system result from a close encounter by two dwarf galaxies, with tidal interaction responsible for the formation of the galactic bridge and tails.

Southern peculiar galaxies ? V
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1976We give astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic information on an apparent triplet of galaxies already discussed by the author. The compact member of the trio has a redshift of one order of magnitude larger than the brighter member and could represent an important case for an investigation of an anomalous redshift.

Photographs of NGC 6052 (Arp 209) indicate a rather unusual structure. The main body of the galaxy shows regions of strong emission and the eastern side shows extended, irregular appendages. (Plate I is reproduced from the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies.) From the optical image, one might guess that rotation could be about a roughly east-west axis, with ...

Spectral study of peculiar galaxies
Modern astronomy: from the Early Universe to exoplanets and black holesA study of five peculiar galaxies (SPRC-69, 0.25cmSPRC-100, 0.25cmSPRC-260, SPRC-269, and SPRC-136) from the new catalog of polar ring galaxies (Sloan-based Polar Ring Catalog, SPRC). Panoramic (3D) spectral data were obtained with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the using the Fabry ...

Exploding and Peculiar Galaxies
1990By 1950 it had become evident that many of the radio sources in the sky were compact (of small angular diameter). But astronomers still had no idea what most of them were. Bolton had identified Taurus A with the Crab Nebula, which was known to be a supernova remnant. Did this mean that most of the other radio sources were supernova remnants?

Radio Sources and Peculiar Galaxies
Nature, 1967Statistical analyses of the distribution of quasars and radio galaxies over the sky suggest that they may be associated with certain types of peculiar galaxies.

Peculiar Velocities and Galaxy Formation
1986The cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole anisotropy (DA) (Lubin and Villela, this volume) implies a Local Group (LG) velocity v D = 640 ± 50Km s -1 relative to the comoving reference frame, in a direction which is 45° away from the Virgo cluster. The CMBDA seems to be consistent both in amplitude and in direction with the DA of the Hubble flow (780
