80-Gb/s OTDM system analysis of a vertical microcavity-based saturable absorber for the enhancement of pulse pedestal suppression [PDF]
In future high-speed optical time-division-multiplexed (OTDM) systems, an important factor that needs to be considered for optical pulse generation schemes is the impact of pulse pedestals on the overall system performance.

Toward a first-principles integrated simulation of tokamak edge plasmas [PDF]
Performance of the ITER is anticipated to be highly sensitive to the edge plasma condition. The edge pedestal in ITER needs to be predicted from an integrated simulation of the necessary first-principles, multi-scale physics codes.

This paper considers the fall of the statue of Edward Colston in long historical perspective and reflects on the place of history, memory and ‘heritage’ within this. The statue has its own long history of protest and challenge, and this paper makes the case for telling the whole history around both its erection and rejection in Bristol.

Electromagnetic drift wave instability in tokamak plasmas with strong pedestal gradient
The linear eigenmode characterizations and the nonlinear turbulence energy spreading of the drift waves in a tokamak plasma with strong pedestal gradient are numerically investigated based on an electromagnetic Landau fluid model. By the linear eigenmode

Self-consistent pedestal prediction for JET-ILW in preparation of the DT campaign [PDF]
The self-consistent core-pedestal prediction model of a combination of EPED1 type pedestal prediction and a simple stiff core transport model is able to predict Type I ELMy (edge localized mode) pedestals of a large JET-ILW (ITER-like wall) database at ...

Isotope mass dependence of pedestal transport in JET H-mode plasmas
We present a comparative transport analysis of the isotope mass dependence in the pedestal of two pairs of deuterium/hydrogen type I ELMy H-mode discharges in JET with ITER-like wall, one characterized by the same input power, the other one by the same ...

Predictions are developed for gradients and profiles of the electron density and temperature in tokamak H-mode pedestals that are in transport quasiequilibrium. They are based on assuming paleoclassical processes provide the irreducible minimum radial plasma transport and dominate in the steep gradient regions of pedestals.

Pedestal and Er profile evolution during an edge localized mode cycle at ASDEX Upgrade [PDF]
The upgrade of the edge charge exchange recombination spectroscopy diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade has enabled highly spatially resolved me asurements of the impurity ion dynamics during an edge-localized mode cycle ( ELM ) with unprecedented temp ...

I-mode studies at ASDEX Upgrade: L-I and I-H transitions, pedestal and confinement properties [PDF]
The I-mode is a plasma regime obtained when the usual L-H power threshold is high, e.g. with unfavourable ion B ∇ direction. It is characterised by the development of a temperature pedestal while the density remains roughly as in the L-mode ...
