Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Characteristic Length Governing Soil Evaporation in Layered Sands

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract In arid and semi‐arid regions, ecosystems exist with shallow water tables, where evaporation is a key component of the water balance. However, systematically addressing soil evaporation remains challenging due to differing interpretations of the mechanisms that control it.

Using Geophysical Observations of a Tracer Injection in a Riparian Aquifer to Explore How Bimodal Transport and Mixing Influences Nitrate Processing

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 3, March 2026.
Our results embrace a simple conceptual model of preferential flow to illuminate the relationships among riparian groundwater nitrate concentration, flow dynamics, and substrate composition in stream corridors loaded with elevated nitrate from agricultural activities.

Defining soil: Proposals of zero‐states, active layer, and págousols (from ice parent materials) to fundamentally expand soil science

open access: yesSoil Science Society of America Journal, Volume 90, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract Recent publications in soil science have reopened discussions over how soil and soil science should be defined, reflecting productive tension between historical constructs and the evolving frontiers of the discipline. While new definitions offered over the past decade provide valuable perspectives, they inevitably rely on past conventions and ...

Comparative evaluation of traditional, machine learning, and deep learning models for estimation of key soil properties using pedotransfer functions in the Indo‐Gangetic Plains

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, Volume 25, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Abstract Direct measurement of soil hydro‐physical properties in the Indo‐Gangetic Plains (IGP) is labor‐intensive and costly, limiting site‐specific water management. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating region‐specific pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for six key properties: field capacity (FC), permanent wilting point (PWP), bulk ...

Compound Climate Events and Cascading Impacts in the IPCC AR6: Analysis of Gaps and Avenues for the AR7

open access: yesWIREs Climate Change, Volume 17, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
The analysis of the IPCC AR6 WGI (2021) and WGII (2022) reports reveals that compound weather and climate events and risks (CE) mainly affect Oceania and Africa, and that the cascading impacts (CI) of climate change are particularly severe in the Arctic. Coastal and urban areas are the most cited archetypes in regard to CE and CI in these reports.

Effectiveness of the GAEC cross-compliance standard Short-term measures for runoff water control on sloping land (temporary ditches and grass strips) in controlling soil erosion

open access: yesItalian Journal of Agronomy, 2011
The agronomic measures made obligatory by the cross-compliance Standard Temporary measures for runoff water control on sloping land included in the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MiPAAF) decree on cross compliance until 2008, and ...
