Across cultures, differences in demography, time use, and activity settings are identified as contributors to the varying patterns observed in adolescent social networks, friendships, and romantic relationships.

The quality of children’s relationships with their caregivers correlates closely with the type of relationships they have with their peers. The more disturbed the parent-child relationship, the less successful is that child likely to be with social relationships in general. In this chapter we explore this phenomenon and follow it through into adulthood.
