Quality by design & failure mode and effects analysis applied to the eco-friendly synthesis of PCL-co-PEG copolymers

open access: yesDiscover Materials
Polycaprolactone-co-polyethylene glycol (PCL/PEG) is a biodegradable and biocompatible copolymer that combines the hydrophobicity of polycaprolactone (PCL) with the hydrophilicity of polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Fabrication of Pliable Biodegradable Polymer foams to Engineer Soft Tissues

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 1996
We have fabricated pliable, porous, biodegradable scaffolds with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) blends using a solvent-casting and particulate-leaching technique.

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Formation of Polyethylene Glycol Particles Using a Low-Temperature Supercritical Assisted Atomization Process

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) particles were prepared using low-temperature supercritical assisted atomization (LTSAA) with carbon dioxide as the spraying medium or the co-solute and acetone as the solvent.

Nucleic Acid Carriers Based on Precise Polymer Conjugates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Polymer polydispersity, random conjugation of functional groups, and poorly understood structure–activity relationships have constantly hampered progress in the development of nucleic acid carriers.

Generating Cell Surface Nucleated Hydrogels with an Artificial Membrane‐Binding Transglutaminase

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cell‐based therapies require advanced strategies to enhance cell delivery and bioactivity. Cell membrane engineering offers an avenue to impart new functions to delivered cells to boost their viability and function. Here, an artificial membrane‐binding transglutaminase is generated and biophysically characterized.

Improving sensitive-reactant efficiency in site-specific PEGylation via semi-batch processing: simulation-based evaluation under throughput constraints

open access: yesChemical Engineering Journal Advances
Semi-batch reactors are preferred for highly exothermic reactions, consecutive/parallel reaction networks, and sensitive reactants. For instance, site-specific PEGylation can benefit from semi-batch reactions through the feeding of sensitive, activated ...

A matched comparison of revision rates of cemented Oxford Unicompartmental Knee Replacements with Single and Twin Peg femoral components, based on data from the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2020
Background and purpose — Registries report high revision rates after unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) due, in part, to aseptic loosing. In an attempt to improve Oxford UKR femoral component fixation a new design was introduced with a Twin rather ...

Crowding effect on helix-coil transition: beyond entropic stabilization

open access: yes, 2012
We report circular dichroism measurements on the helix-coil transition of poly(L-glutamic acid) in solution with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a crowding agent.

Endothelial Cells Angiogenesis in Sulfated Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) Hydrogels Enhanced by Bioactive Glass‐Released Ions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A mechanically tunable hydrogel composed of gelatin, chondroitin sulfate and laminin promotes angiogenesis in vitro without the supplement of growth factors. Endothelial cells morphogenesis was further enhanced by medium conditioned with bioactive glass 58S‐released ions (Ca and Si), thus offering a promising strategy to vascularize 3D tissue ...
