Development of sperm cryopreservation techniques in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis
Abstract The pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, is being considered for aquaculture due to its high demand and market price. Reproduction and larviculture studies have demonstrated the feasibility of massive fingerling production, and techniques that prolong life and increase gamete viability can assist in the culture development of this species.

Progenitor Radial Cells and Neurogenesis in Pejerrey Fish Forebrain
Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2010The central nervous system of adult teleost fish is peculiar because of the following features: (1) the persistence of radial glial cells, (2) an important neurogenic activity and (3) a high aromatase expression by radial cells. In this study, the proliferative zones of the forebrain were described using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) treatment in the brain ...

The endocrine mechanisms that regulate spermatogenesis and their interaction with environmental cues have been poorly studied compared with oogenesis in fish. The aim of this work was to study the spermatogenesis in pejerrey under the influence of photoperiod and water temperature fluctuation in the wild, evaluating the transcript levels of brain Gnrh ...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the essential components controlling the brain-pituitary-gonad axis during pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) oogenesis in the wild. Ovarian developmental stages from vitellogenesis up to ovulation were associated with increasing day length and water temperatures below 21°C (winter and beginning of spring ...

Effects of a glyphosate-based herbicide in pejerrey Odontesthes humensis embryonic development
Chemosphere, 2017Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are the major pesticides used worldwide. Among them, the Roundup formulations are the most popular. Some aspects of GBH toxicity are well known, such as induction of oxidative stress. However, embryotoxicity is scarcely known.

Growth hormone is an essential polypeptide required for normal growth and development of vertebrates. The pejerrey fish, Odontesthes bonariensis, is a South American atherinid freshwater fish considered as a promising species for aquaculture. Although growth hormone has been characterized in a number of fish, there are no published data on the ...

Effects of Hypoxia on the Reproductive Endocrine Axis of the Pejerrey (Odontesthes Bonariensis)
Fish Physiology and BiochemistryRecently, hypoxic areas have been identified in water bodies of the Pampas region due to human activity. The objective of this work was to study the effect of low concentrations of dissolved oxygen (hypoxia) on the reproductive endocrine axis of a pampas fish (Odontesthes bonariensis). Groups of 8 males and 8 females were subjected to severe hypoxia (2-

Pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis
2017Pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis was reared in the recirculation system for 1 year. The system consisted of two particle-trap equipped octagonal tanks (0.75 m3) for the rapid collection of feces and uneaten feed, a mechanical filter, a UV unit, a biological filter which provided nitrification, and a hollow-fiber oxygen injection system.

Sex differentiation and hormonal feminization in pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis
Aquaculture, 1996Abstract An investigation was conducted on the histological process of gonadal sex differentiation and the suitability of steroid hormone administration for sex control in pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis . Light histological examination of the gonads of larvae and juvenile fish revealed that the primordial gonads were already formed at hatching ...
