Reconstructing past fisheries catches for large pelagic species in the Indian Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Comprehensive catch data are fundamental to support the sustainable management of large pelagic fisheries. However, catch data reported by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) on behalf of its member countries currently under-represent the extent of ...

Bio-economic indicators of fisheries: impact of variations in landings and fish size on market prices in Istanbul Fish Market [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2023
Fisheries are of immense importance to Mediterranean countries, for protein, employment and livelihoods. Studies addressing the factors affecting fish price dynamics are of interest to examine their drivers as prices often dictate target fisheries.

The Challenges of Managing Depredation and Bycatch of Toothed Whales in Pelagic Longline Fisheries: Two U.S. Case Studies

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Direct interactions with fisheries are broadly recognized as the leading conservation threat to small cetaceans. In open-ocean environments, one of the primary gear types implicated in these interactions is the pelagic longline.

Condition of fish in catches of pelagic fisheries : Post capture fish condition within several pelagic fisheries

open access: yes, 2021
Pelagic fisheries in European waters target small pelagic fish such as herring, mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting and silver smelt. The Dutch pelagic fishery is performed with pelagic freezer trawlers. Catches are pumped from the cod-end on board into the Refrigerated Seawater (RSW) tanks.

Migration of artisanal fishers targeting small pelagics in West Africa: current trends and development

open access: yesMarine and Fishery Sciences, 2022
This study sought to present the evolutions and new trends of migrant fishing targeting small pelagics in West Africa from fishing to consumption stage.

Horizontal and vertical movements of immature dusky sharks Carcharhinus obscurus in relation to commercial longline fisheries in the western North Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry, 2021
Background Many species of sharks, including the dusky shark Carcharhinus obscurus, are often incidentally captured in commercial pelagic and bottom longline fisheries.

Shark conservation hindered by lack of habitat protection

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
Many of the world’s shark populations are in decline, indicating the need for improved conservation and management. Well managed and appropriately located marine parks and marine protected areas (MPAs) have potential to enhance shark conservation by ...

Climate-driven deoxygenation elevates fishing vulnerability for the ocean's widest ranging shark

open access: yeseLife, 2021
Climate-driven expansions of ocean hypoxic zones are predicted to concentrate pelagic fish in oxygenated surface layers, but how expanding hypoxia and fisheries will interact to affect threatened pelagic sharks remains unknown.

Hawaii's Pelagic Fisheries

open access: yes, 1993
Hawaii's diverse pelagic fisheries supply the bulk of the State's total catch. The largest Hawaii fishery is the recently expanded longline fishery, which now lands about 4,400 metric tons (t) of broadbill swordfish, Xiphias gladius; 1,500 t of bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, and 3,000 t of other pelagic species annually.

Migrations and habitat use of the smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) in the Atlantic Ocean. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
The smooth hammerhead shark, Sphyrna zygaena, is a cosmopolitan semipelagic shark captured as bycatch in pelagic oceanic fisheries, especially pelagic longlines targeting swordfish and/or tunas.
