Oceanic Ecosystems and Pelagic Fisheries

1996
Abstract Most of us view the ocean as strangers who can only visit for a short time before returning to our more solid and airy homes. But ours is largely a wet and salty planet where life has had its greatest success, in terms of phyletic biological diversity and its persistence over geologic time, in the ocean.

Remote Sensing for Productivity in Pelagic Fisheries

Nature, 1973
IT has been argued that the reason for going into space is to obtain a better look at our own planet. One of the specific projects of NASA will be remote measurement of phytoplankton chlorophyll in the world's oceans, the practical use of this measurement most often mentioned relating to pelagic fisheries. A proponent is Dr Maurice Blackburn of Scripps

Fisheries management and the value chain: The Northeast Atlantic pelagic fisheries case

Fisheries Research, 2017
We develop a model to identify the welfare-optimal management of fisheries that operate in the global economy. Historically, fisheries economics has mainly focused on the loss of rent due to fleet overcapacity and less on the potential welfare gain by having a broader approach to fisheries management.

Climate variability and pelagic fisheries in northern Chile

Progress in Oceanography, 2001
A time series analysis of long-term climate variability in northern Chile (18 °21-24°00S) shows anomal- ies associated with the El Nino events and the longer warm period observed since 1976, followed by a cooling trend since mid 1980s. The succession of pelagic fisheries, anchovy ( Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax), occurring in this ...

Bioeconomics of the Philippine small pelagics fishery

Time series analysis of catch and effort data in the Philippines small pelagics fishery resulted in a level of biological and economic overexploitation. Open-access equilibrium has been reached at 410,000 hp representing a catch level of 465,000 tonnes. Present levels of effort would have to be reduced by 40% to attain maximum economic yield.

Modelling the world system of small pelagic fisheries

2008
Small pelagic fisheries produce more than 25% of the fish caught in the ocean. Their production is mainly dedicated to fish meal and fish oil production (more than 80%). In this system, there is a tension between a highly variable natural system and a more rigid economic system, with a high increase in demand.
