First Report of Echthrogaleus denticulatus (Smith 1874) on the Pelagic Thresher Shark (Alopias pelagicus Nakamura 1935) from Indian EEZ of Andaman Sea

open access: yesSains Malaysiana, 2017
The present study reports the occurrence of the pandarid parasite, Echthrogaleus denticulatus as an ectoparasite on the pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) from the Indian EEZ of Andaman Sea. A total of 36 parasite specimens were found aggregated near the cloacal aperture of eight pelagic thresher sharks caught as bycatch by multifilament tuna ...

Exploring practical conservation measures for pelagic thresher sharks using local knowledge in Sunda Banda seascape

open access: yesFrontiers in Ocean Sustainability
The pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) is an evolutionarily distinct and globally endangered species, with population declines primarily attributed to targeted fishing and bycatch in both small-scale and industrial fisheries. As the world's largest shark fishing nation, Indonesia is a global priority for pelagic thresher shark conservation ...

New host and geographical record of Eudactylina pusilla Cressey, 1967 from Indian waters with DNA barcodes

open access: yesJournal of Fisheries, 2019
The present paper reports the first record of the parasite Eudactylina pusilla Cressey, 1967 from the gills of the pelagic thresher shark, Alopias pelagicus Nakamura, 1935 collected during a multifilament longline operation at a depth of 762 m from ...

Policy Analysis Of Pelagic Thresher Shark (Alopias Pelagicus) Conservation And The Role Of Local Communities In Preservation In Indonesian Waters

open access: yesDevotion : Journal of Research and Community Service
The thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) is an apex predator that plays an important role in marine ecosystems, but its population continues to decline due to overexploitation and habitat degradation. This study analyzes the thresher shark conservation policy in the Alor Marine Conservation Area, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and the role of local ...

Catch, bycatch, and mitigation options for endangered sharks in data poor fisheries: a case study on pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) in the eastern Indian Ocean

open access: yesPacific Conservation Biology
Context Endangered pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) are facing high fishing pressure in many countries. As the world’s largest shark fishing nation, with particularly high catch rates of thresher sharks, the impact of Indonesian fisheries has become a global priority for thresher shark conservation ...

Biological Aspects and Catch Fluctuation of the Pelagic Thresher Shark, Alopias pelagicus from the Indian Ocean

open access: yesBiological Aspects and Catch Fluctuation of the Pelagic Thresher Shark, Alopias pelagicus from the Indian Ocean
The pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) is an oceanic shark and is generally caught as a bycatch by tuna gill net fisheries operating in the Indian Ocean. This research was conducted from April 2002 to December 2007 at Cilacap-Central Java fish landings. Biology and catch data were collected through direct observation and the use of enumerators.
