Aspects of the biology of the little shag (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos brevirostris Veillot 1817) : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Aspects of the biology of the little shag (Phalacrocorax melanoleucos brevirostris Veillot) were examined from December 1980 until April 1983 at Hamilton's and Sexton's Lagoons in lowland Manawatu. Body measurements and plumage patterns of both sexes are

Characterising Migratory Bird Assemblages in Understudied Regions by Integrating Radar and Citizen Science Data

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 8, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Migratory birds are declining globally. In regions where bird migration patterns remain poorly documented, comprehensive data and tools are needed to advance conservation efforts, support sustainable development and fulfil international biodiversity commitments.

Tracing Waterbirds in Water: A Pilot Study on the Utility of eDNA Monitoring for Inland Australian Waterbirds

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Australia's vast network of inland wetlands attracts thousands of waterbirds to congregate and breed during ‘boom’ periods of rainfall and productivity. Monitoring waterbird biodiversity predominantly relies on annual aerial and ground‐based surveys, which may miss rare or elusive species of conservation importance.

Host associations, biogeography, and phylogenetics of avian malaria in southern African waterfowl [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The relevance of spatial variation in the environment and host communities for parasite community composition is poorly documented, creating a need for additional case studies from which general principles can be developed.

Near real‐time monitoring of wading birds using uncrewed aircraft systems and computer vision

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 11, Issue 3, Page 255-265, June 2025.
Developments in aerial survey methods and computer vision models allow for wildlife population monitoring over large areas. A key limitation to these approaches for active monitoring is the slow process of converting imagery into data. Near real‐time monitoring is crucial for management decisions and ecological forecasting.

Helminths Assemblage of the bare-faced ibis, Phimosus infuscatus (Lichtenstein, 1823) (Pelecaniformes: Threskiornithidae), in southern Brazil

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2019
Birds act as hosts for a variety of parasites, many of these are unreported. The literature provides scant information on the helminth fauna of Phimosus infuscatus.
