Fitness benefits of alternated chick provisioning in cooperatively breeding carrion crows

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 93, Issue 1, Page 95-108, January 2024.
In birds, parents typically raise their offspring together and can be assisted by helpers. Here, we show that carrion crow carers that take turns in feeding the brood produce healthier nestlings than those that do not. The payoff of cooperation therefore depends on the degree of coordination of group members.

American White Pelicans Hand Raised until Fledging and Examination of the Trematode Infection Bolbophorus Damnificus in these Birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Because little is known about juvenile American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) this study was conducted to gather more information on disease, general ecology and growth of American White Pelicans from hatching to fledging.

Indirect Cannibalism by Crèche-aged American White Pelican (<em>Pelecanus erythrorhynchos</em>) Chicks

open access: yesThe Canadian Field-Naturalist, 2013
At nesting colonies of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), many chicks die from siblicide, severe weather, and disease; this results in carcasses available for scavenging by conspecifics (i.e., indirect cannibalism). Indirect cannibalism has not been reported previously for this species.

First Documented Nesting of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) in Ohio, USA

open access: yesThe Ohio Journal of Science
The discovery and documentation of a new breeding species in a defined area, such as a state, is a crucial first step in understanding the basic natural history of a species and its consequent needs for management and conservation. The American White Pelican has gradually expanded its breeding range from the prairies of North America into the Great ...

Population Dynamics and Management Implications for American White Pelicans (Pelecanus Erythrorhynchos) Breeding at Marsh Lake, Lac Qui Parle Wildlife Management Area, Minnesota [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is a prominent breeding bird in Minnesota, but little information has been available on their production, population dynamics, growth and development, or demographic characteristics.

open access: yes, 2009
In order to determine potential definitive hosts of the digenetic trematode, Bolbophorus damnificus, two American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), two Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus), two Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias ...

Life History Studies of Two Digenetic Trematodes, Bolbophorus Damnificus and an Unknown Clinostomoid Species, that Infect Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The commercial production of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is major industry in Mississippi. Infections of channel catfish with the digenetic trematode Bolbophorus damnificus have often been associated with heavy economic losses in the industry ...

open access: yes, 2018
Aeromonas hydrophila is a Gramnegative bacterium ubiquitous to freshwater and brackish aquatic environments that can cause disease in fish, humans, reptiles, and birds. Recent severe outbreaks of disease in commercial channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)
