Characterization of energy loss in jet mechanism of a Pelton turbine [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fluid Engineering
Pelton turbines are becoming widely used in hydropower generation. However, the internal flow mechanism and energy loss characteristics of these turbines remain unclear, and there has been relatively little research in this area.

Design of an impeller of Pelton turbine

open access: yesDesign of Machines and Structures
Pelton turbine impeller (often called Pelton wheel or Pelton runner) is the main rotating component of a Pelton turbine, which is a type of impulse water turbine used to generate electricity from high-head, low-flow water sources. The Pelton turbine operates on the impulse principle; water jet strikes the buckets of the runner and the change in ...

Co‐Benefits From Species‐Level Conservation Contribute to Multilateral Environmental Agreement Targets

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 18, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
ABSTRACT Conservation investments do not operate within a zero‐sum paradigm, but instead provide opportunities for co‐benefits across sustainable development and conservation goals. Recognizing the interconnectedness of conservation efforts within socioenvironmental systems can amplify support for conservation actions, ultimately creating additional co‐

Advanced condition monitoring of Pelton turbines [PDF]

open access: yesMeasurement, 2018
The ability of hydropower to adapt the electricity generation to the demand is necessary to integrate wind and solar energy into the electrical grid. Nowadays, hydropower turbines are required to work under harsher operating conditions and an advanced condition monitoring to detect damage is crucial.

Alternative Control Schemes of Pelton Turbines to Increase the Integration of Variable Renewable Energy Sources

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This paper proposes innovative control schemes for Pelton turbines to improve frequency regulation in isolated power systems with high penetration of variable renewable energy sources (vRESs). Traditionally, Pelton turbine deflectors are used as safety mechanisms; however, this study explores their potential for continuous frequency regulation ...

Addressing Freshwater Scarcity and Hydrogen Production: Offshore Wind and Reverse Osmosis Synergies

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 8, Issue 12, December 2024.
This work aims to use offshore wind power for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination and water electrolysis, producing green hydrogen. By incorporating a pressure exchanger (PX) to enhance energy recovery, improved efficiency and reduced operational costs are targeted.

Investigation on unstable flow characteristics and energy dissipation in Pelton turbine

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics
The internal flow scale of a Pelton turbine is variable, and the interaction between the jet and the bucket has strong transient characteristics, resulting in an incomplete understanding of its internal vortex structure evolution and energy dissipation ...

Numerical prediction of Pelton turbine efficiency

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2010
This paper presents a numerical analysis of flow in a 2 jet Pelton turbine with horizontal axis. The analysis was done for the model at several operating points in different operating regimes. The results were compared to the results of a test of the model. Analysis was performed using ANSYS CFX-12.1 computer code.

A dam management problem with energy production as an optimal switching problem

open access: yesApplied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1596-1611, November/December 2024.
Abstract We consider an optimal stochastic control problem for a dam. Electrical power production is operating under an uncertain setting for electricity market prices and water level which has to be kept under control. Indeed, the water level inside the basin cannot exceed a certain threshold for safety reasons, and at the same time cannot decrease ...

Investigation of the Effects of the Jet Impingement Angle on Torque Generation at the Suction Surface of a Pelton Turbine Bucket [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
The performance of a Pelton turbine was investigated by means of an integrated numerical and experimental study that focused on the fluid dynamics associated with the bucket suction surface during the jet–bucket interactions.
