Amanita theophili sp. nov. (Amanitaceae) from central Mexico

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Amanita theophili sp. nov., a member of Amanita sect. Amidella (Amanitaceae), is described from temperate pine‐oak forests in Morelos, central Mexico. Morphological features and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and 28S rDNA sequences confirm its distinct taxonomic status. The new species is morphologically similar to A. peckiana and A.

Global analysis of annual survival among shorebirds reveals a negative effect of migration distance and a decline in recent decades

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Annual survival is a key demographic parameter driving population trends in wildlife populations. However, despite numerous species‐specific or regional studies, global reviews of the factors affecting the survival of declining taxa remain scarce. Here, we investigated annual survival of fledged immature and adult shorebirds, a globally‐distributed and

Foraging and movement flexibility shape seed dispersal by an arboreal primate in a modified landscape

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
As habitats change, the effectiveness of animal‐mediated seed dispersal increasingly depends on animal responses to altered structure and resources. With habitat loss and degradation accelerating across the tropics, understanding how dispersers' foraging behavior and movement influence seed removal and deposition is critical to promoting forest ...

Partial recovery of large seed arrival following ecological restoration in fragmented tropical rainforests

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Forest restoration success depends crucially on the reinitiation of ecological processes such as seed arrival that drive natural regeneration. We know little about whether, by increasing and diversifying local seed sources to alleviate seed limitation, and attracting animal frugivores to alleviate dispersal limitation, restoration could shift seed ...

O direito penal da crise

open access: yesBoletim IBCCRIM
Os diferentes regimes de acumulação e de regulação que acompanham e alicerçam as bases estruturais das sociedades têm, em si, uma série de especificidades, às quais não passaram despercebidas daqueles que as buscaram compreender criticamente.

Urban wild meat and pangolin consumption across southern forested Cameroon: The limited influence of COVID‐19

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Overexploitation of wildlife is pervasive in many tropical regions, and in addition to being a significant conservation and sustainability concern, it has received global attention given discussions over the origins of zoonotic disease outbreaks.

Digital fire technologies and community networks: Cultivating just sociotechnical practices for living with planetary change

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Fires are expanding in frequency and intensity worldwide due to climate change and land‐use transformations. At the same time, fire often plays a regenerative role in ecosystems. Traditional and cultural practices incorporate fire use for landscape management and landscape renewal. In this complex matrix of fire ecologies, digital technologies

Pena di morte e percezioni della morte (Quando la pena non è pena)

open access: yes, 2022
It is not possible to assess the meaning and the impact of the death penalty outside of historical and cultural contexts in which it is applied. An approach, that is also thanatological, seems necessary. In many cases (in ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary history) societies and cultures have been based on taxonomies of values, in which death ...
