Estimating penalized spline regressions: theory and application to economics

open access: yes, 2009
This article gives a brief survey of penalized spline smoothing. Penalized spline smoothing is a general nonparametric estimation technique which allows to fit smooth but else unspecified functions to empirical data.

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.

Pre‐Pregnancy Body Mass Index, Diabetes Status, and Gestational Age‐Specific Stillbirth Risk: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesBJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To quantify and compare the gestational age (GA)‐specific risks of stillbirth across pre‐pregnancy body mass index (BMI) categories, stratified by pre‐pregnancy diabetes status: Design Retrospective population‐based cohort study. Setting United States from 2022 to 2023.

Comparison of non-parametric methods for ungrouping coarsely aggregated data

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2016
Background Histograms are a common tool to estimate densities non-parametrically. They are extensively encountered in health sciences to summarize data in a compact format.

Performance of robust GCV and modified GCV for spline smoothing

open access: yes, 2012
While it is a popular selection criterion for spline smoothing, generalized cross-validation (GCV) occasionally yields severely undersmoothed estimates.

Semiparametric penalized spline regression

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper, we propose a new semiparametric regression estimator by using a hybrid technique of parametric approach and nonparametric penalized spline method.

Pendekatan Penalized Spline Pada Regresi Nonparametrik [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008

Not all Temperature Shocks are Alike: Disentangling Heat and High Temperature Shocks and Their Effects on Inflation in Australia

open access: yesEconomic Record, EarlyView.
We study the effects of heat and high temperature shocks on inflation in Australia using monthly, state‐level temperature anomaly data via two stages. In the first stage, we decompose temperature anomalies into orthogonal components using a structural vector autoregression with long‐run restrictions.
