Structured penalties for functional linear models---partially empirical eigenvectors for regression [PDF]
One of the challenges with functional data is incorporating spatial structure, or local correlation, into the analysis. This structure is inherent in the output from an increasing number of biomedical technologies, and a functional linear model is often ...

Smoothing of the lower-order exact penalty function for inequality constrained optimization
In this paper, we propose a method to smooth the general lower-order exact penalty function for inequality constrained optimization. We prove that an approximation global solution of the original problem can be obtained by searching a global solution of ...

Clustering and variable selection for categorical multivariate data [PDF]
This article investigates unsupervised classification techniques for categorical multivariate data. The study employs multivariate multinomial mixture modeling, which is a type of model particularly applicable to multilocus genotypic data.

Parallel Algorithm of Balanced Sparse Packing of Rectangular Parallelepipeds
Introduction. Varieties of the problem of packing of rectangular parallelepipeds have a wide practical application in various fields of activity, for example, in the optimal filling of containers, in the design and layout of a wide variety of ...

The continuous quadrant penalty formulation of logical constraints
Could continuous optimization address efficiently logical constraints? We propose a continuous-optimization alternative to the usual discrete-optimization (big-M and complementary) formulations of logical constraints, that can lead to effective practical

Smooth exact penalty functions II: a reduction to standard exact penalty functions [PDF]
A new class of smooth exact penalty functions was recently introduced by Huyer and Neumaier. In this paper, we prove that the new smooth penalty function for a constrained optimization problem is exact if and only if the standard nonsmooth penalty function for this problem is exact.

Longitudinal functional models with structured penalties
This article addresses estimation in regression models for longitudinally collected functional covariates (time-varying predictor curves) with a longitudinal scalar outcome. The framework consists of estimating a time-varying coefficient function that is modelled as a linear combination of time-invariant functions with time-varying coefficients.
