‘The Good Couscous That Pleases Us!’: The Meanings of Enduring Imperialist Imagery in Postcolonial French Food Advertising, 1970–2000

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines a wave of Orientalism‐inspired food commercials that appeared on television in France between 1975 and 2000. Older commercials for couscous were more banal, emphasizing a given product's superiority or affordability. Around 1975, however, there was a concerted shift in the advertising; new spots contained exoticized ...

The self-penguin contribution to $K \to 2 \pi$

open access: yes, 1996
We consider the contribution to $K \rightarrow 2 \pi$ decays from the non-diagonal $s \ra d$ quark transition amplitude. First, we calculate the most important part of the $s \rightarrow d$ transition, the so-called self-penguin amplitude $\sim G_F ...

Yoruba Histories of Marriage and Belonging: Gender, Power and Innovation in Eighteenth‐Century West Africa

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article argues that marriage was central to historical change in the Yoruba‐speaking region of West Africa during the eighteenth century. It draws on ìtàn, a distinct oral source, to show that conjugality shaped Yoruba processes of urbanisation and political centralisation, gendered divisions of labour and social innovation and creativity.

Charming Penguins Saga

open access: yes, 2002
We briefly recall the main formulae for computing the B -> K pi branching ratios within the "charming penguin" approach, present an updated fit to the data, and explain why we believe that, in general, these fits can hardly be used to extract gamma.

Direct CP Violation in $K_L\to\pi^+\pi^-\gamma$

open access: yes, 1993
CP violation due to interference between $K_L$ and $K_S$ decays into $\pi ^+\pi^-\gamma$ is analyzed in the Standard Model. The CP-violating parameter $\epsilon'_{+- \gamma}$, which is the difference between $\eta_{+-\gamma}$ and $\eta_{+-}$, receives ...

Cuttings, Combings, Fettlings and Flock: Gender and Australian Wool ‘Waste’, 1900–1950

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As Australia's wool industry produced vast amounts of fine fleece from the nineteenth century, the wool processing and clothes manufacturing industries generated waste – products like cuttings, combings, fettlings and flock. Salvaged and then sold to waste merchants, these and other materials had a second life.

‘The Bethune College Sensation’: Gender, Archive and Radical Passivity

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article explores the student protests at Bethune College, Calcutta, on 3 February 1928, against the Simon Commission, a British parliamentary delegation that excluded Indian representation. On this day, female students staged a quiet but radical act of defiance by refusing to attend classes, sign apologies or vacate their hostel, despite ...

Sedimentary DNA insights into Holocene Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) populations and ecology in the Ross Sea, Antarctica

open access: yesNature Communications
We report 156 sediment metagenomes from Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) colonies dating back 6000 years along the Ross Sea coast, Antarctica, and identify marine and terrestrial eukaryotes, including locally occurring bird and seal species.

Food Waste as a Property Problem

open access: yesThe Modern Law Review, EarlyView.
Within a more general context of ‘overconsumption’, the United Nations estimates that annually 11.39 per cent of total global food production is wasted by households, and UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 declares thoroughgoing ambitions to halve food waste by 2030. This article argues that existing efforts to address this global challenge are

Semileptonic and Electroweak Penguin Results from BABAR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We report recent results from the BABAR experiment on semileptonic charmless B-meson decays and electroweak penguin processes. Semileptonic charmless decays are used to determine |Vub| and the exclusive modes considered here also begin to constrain QCD ...
