Phase transition in a sexual age-structured model of learning foreign languages

open access: yes, 2005
The understanding of language competition helps us to predict extinction and survival of languages spoken by minorities. A simple agent-based model of a sexual population, based on the Penna model, is built in order to find out under which circumstances ...

Temporal dynamics of mesopelagic fishes within a mesoscale eddy: A Lagrangian perspective

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2026.
Abstract Mesoscale eddies are physically dynamic environments, yet biological responses within them are often treated as static, with eddy polarity (anticyclones vs. cyclones) serving as the dominant conceptual framework. Temporal dynamics of animals within eddies—particularly at mid‐trophic levels—remain largely unresolved.

Compost legacy effects in active roadside restoration: Medium‐term shifts in plant succession

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April/June 2026.
Roadside restoration experiment established on volcanic tephra following road construction in Andean Patagonia. A single application of municipal (MC) or biosolids (BC) compost rapidly increased plant cover compared with untreated controls (C) but led to distinct, exotic‐dominated plant communities over 6 years.

Polarization in a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rabi coupling

open access: yes, 2018
We investigate the polarization of a two-component three-dimensional fermionic gas made of repulsive alkali-metal atoms. The two pseudo-spin components correspond to two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled.

Effects of L‐Tyrosine Ingestion on Endurance Performance in Mentally Fatigued Cyclists

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Sport Science, Volume 26, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigated whether L‐tyrosine supplementation enhances endurance performance in mentally fatigued cyclists. Twelve recreational cyclists completed two constant‐workload tests to exhaustion cycling tests under two experimental conditions at 80% of maximal endurance power output: L‐tyrosine ingestion (300 mg/kg) under mental fatigue

POPULATION STRUCTURE IN THE PENNA MODEL

open access: yesTASK Quarterly, 2003
Numerical simulations of growing population, based on the Penna model, are presented. We consider biological ageing as a result of the accumulation of mutations in the genotype. We present an example of simulated population structure and compare it with

Effects of ribavirin on cytokine production of recall antigens and phytohemaglutinin-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. (Inhibitory effects of ribavirin on cytokine production)

open access: yesAnnals of Hepatology, 2004
Aim: To evaluate the effects of ribavirin on cytokine production of recall antigen and PHA-stimulated PBMC obtained from healthy individuals.Materials and methods: PBMC were challenged with tetanus toxoid (5μg/mL) and PHA (10 μmL) in absence or presence ...

Catastrophic senescence of the Pacific salmon without mutation-accumulation

open access: yes, 2001
We derive catastrophic senescence of the Pacific salmon from an aging model which was recently proposed by Stauffer. The model is based on the postulates of a minimum reproduction age and a maximal genetic lifespan.

Aquatic Bacterial Community Responses to Aquatic Contaminants Revealed by 16S rRNA Metabarcoding in Field‐Based Microcosms

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2026.
This study used sedimentary eDNA analysis and field‐based microcosms to assess the impacts of three major aquatic contaminants on bacterial assemblage structure. Our results showed significant but varied impact depending on exposure to which contaminant; we suggest five phyla, 13 families, and three species as potential bacterial bioindicators and ...

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia: review from a surgeon´s perspective in the beginning of the 21 st. century

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2014
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) most commonly due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) is the most common type of disorder of sex development. This review will focus on CAH addressing historical and current surgical techniques with their anatomical ...
