A three-dimensional approach to pennation angle estimation for human skeletal muscle
Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2014Pennation angle (PA) is an important property of human skeletal muscle that plays a significant role in determining the force contribution of fascicles to skeletal movement. Two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography is the most common approach to measure PA.

Muscle-fiber pennation angles are greater in hypertrophied than in normal muscles
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993Muscle-fiber pennation angles were measured in vivo with the use of ultrasonography to investigate the relationship between fiber pennation and muscle size for 32 male subjects (from untrained subjects to highly trained bodybuilders). From the image of a B-mode ultrasonogram, fiber pennation angles and thickness of triceps brachii were determined, the

A New Approach to Estimation of Muscle Pennation Angle in Ultrasound Image
2010 4th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, 2010Ultrasound imaging has been an effective tool for measuring the muscle architectures, including the pennation angle. In this work, we proposed a new approach combining wavelet transform (WT) and Hough transform (HT) to detect the straight line-shaped patterns of aponeurosis, fascicle or bone, and then to quantify the pennation angles in ultrasound ...

Muscles are the primary component responsible for the locomotion and change of posture of the human body. The physiologic basis of muscle force production and movement is determined by the muscle architecture (maximum muscle force, [Formula: see text], optimal muscle fiber length, [Formula: see text], tendon slack length, [Formula: see text], and ...

Pennation Angle Dependency in Skeletal Muscle Tissue Doppler Strain in Dynamic Contractions
Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, 2011Tissue velocity imaging (TVI) is a Doppler based ultrasound technique that can be used to study regional deformation in skeletal muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to develop a biomechanical model to describe the TVI strain's dependency on the pennation angle.

Physiological Measurement, 2018
To examine the influence of pennation angle on measurement of shear wave elastography, this study utilised the propagation view mode that can reveal shear wave propagation in human pennate muscle in vivo. The validity of the propagation view mode was qualitatively confirmed by observation of shear wave propagation in tissue-mimicking phantoms.

In vivo Measurement of Fascicle Length and Pennation Angle of the Human Biceps femoris Muscle
Cells Tissues Organs, 2001The purpose of this investigation was to measure in vivo fascicle length (Lfas) and pennation angle (PA) of the long head of the biceps femoris muscle (BFlh m.) at different hip and knee angles while the muscle was relaxed using ultrasonography (US).

A comparison of muscle pennation angles measured with DTI fiber tractography and 3D-ultrasound
ISMRM Annual Meeting, 2023Pennation angle is an important architecture parameter to understand muscle functioning. It is commonly measured using 2D ultrasound. However, it is difficult to infer 3D muscle architecture from 2D imaging. Therefore, we compare the pennation angle measurements obtained with 3D-DTI fiber-tractography and 3D-ultrasound (3D-US).

Gait & Posture, 2010
The purpose of the current study was to examine the reproducibility of fascicle length and pennation angle of gastrocnemius medialis while human walking. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of the reproducibility of fascicle length and pennation angle of gastrocnemius medialis in vivo during human gait.
