Summary Callus cultures of two species of Pennisetum , a cultivated P. americanum and a wild species P. purpureum showed different tolerance to sodium chloride {0.1-2%). P. purpureum was more tolerant and showed a higher growth rate. There was a sudden and drastic decrease in fresh and dry weights in both the species at a concentration of 0.2%

Sectional translocation monosomy in a plant of Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke
Chromosoma, 1980In the F2 progeny of the cross between a desynaptic line and a normal line of Pearl Millet (2n=14) a plant with 13 chromosomes in a half of its tillers was identified. In addition to five bivalents the PMCs in these short tillers carried either a chain trivalent or else a heteromorphic bivalent and a univalent both of which were attached to the ...

Environmental Influences on Panicle Differentiation and Spikelet Number of Pennisetum americanum
Journal of Experimental Botany, 1986Coaldrake, P. D. and Pearson, C. J. 1986. Environmental influences on panicle differentiation and spikelet number of Pennisetum americanum.—J. exp. Bot. 37: 865-875. Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) has a juvenile phase after which the time to panicle initiation is reduced by short daylengths.

Male-sterility in nigerian bulrush millets (Pennisetum americanum (L.) K. Schum)
Euphytica, 1982The occurrence of three male-sterile plants is reported. One in a population of ex-Bormu, an improved recommended variety of day-length neutral ‘gero’ bulrush millet and the two others in the selfed progeny of a population of ‘maiwa’ bulrush millet, a short-day photoperiod-sensitive type.
