Journal of Finance, 2018In this paper, I examine the effect of pension policy on the structure of financial systems around the world. In particular, I explore the hypothesis that policies that promote pension savings also promote the development of capital markets.

, 2007 People with an uncertain health condition might face a double worry. They fear to get disabled, and if they are disabled, that they will receive a low pension. To keep their health they should work less. To improve their disability pension they should work more. This paper demonstrates that the latter effect is the strongest empirically.

The private retirement fund system in Turkey was put into effect as of 2001 with the Private Pension Savings and Investment System Act No. 4632. This system, as a complement to the public social security system, aims to provide an additional income to individuals during retirement by directing their savings for retirement towards investment.

Public expenditure on consumption and transfers to households has increased dramatically in Sweden; from 33 per cent of GDP in 1970 to 52 per cent in 1992. The national pension system more than doubled in relation to GDP during the period, from 5 per cent to 12, thus being one of the most important factors underlying this expansion.
