Unravelling the spatial and temporal variability of natural disturbances in European forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
The heterogeneity of natural disturbance patterns and high temporal variability across European Forest suggest the need of adopting context‐dependent management strategies tailored to both the dominant disturbance agent and local environmental conditions, particularly in the most vulnerable regions, such as the Iberian Peninsula—with large and frequent

Sazonalidade e variação espacial do índice de estado trófico do açude Orós, Ceará, Brasil.

open access: yesAgro@mbiente On-line, 2014
Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar a qualidade das águas do açude Orós, estudando os atributos físicoquímicos e biológicos quanto à sua contribuição para com o processo de eutrofização, bem como identificar o nível trófico das águas usando o ...

Assessing contributions of deterministic versus stochastic processes to local species assembly: A field experiment with annual plant‐dominated communities in gypsum systems

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 3, March 2026.
In this study, we experimentally show that stochasticity can play prominent roles in driving local species assembly in annual plant‐dominated communities of semiarid gypsum ecosystems. Drylands are traditionally viewed as restrictive environments that impose strong deterministic filtering effects, but neutral events can also contribute decisively to ...

Information and Communication Technologies Infrastructure and Environmental Quality in ECOWAS: A PMG Model Approach

open access: yesJournal of Critical Infrastructure Policy, Volume 7, Issue 1, Spring/Summer 2026.
ABSTRACT The relationship between information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and environmental quality remains a critical issue for developing regions such as the ECOWAS member states. While some scholars argue that ICT infrastructure exacerbates environmental degradation, others contend that it can enhance environmental performance.

Diversity modulates above‐ground productivity in response to disturbances: The case of Iberian forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 12, Page 3605-3621, December 2025.
We analysed whether forest productivity responses to disturbances were modulated by structural and functional diversity, as well as by functional dominance, and whether these responses vary among functional groups. Forest diversity can mitigate the negative effects of disturbances on productivity.

The Impact of Sustainable Nitrogen Management on the Health Risks of Unsafe Drinking Water and the Mediating Role of Food Production

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 42, Issue 6, Page 1496-1508, November 2025.
ABSTRACT This study adopts a policy‐centric perspective to explore the complex relationship between sustainable nitrogen management (SNM) and the health risks associated with unsafe drinking water. The critical policy challenge lies in balancing the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high agricultural productivity with their ...

Water‐saving strategies in rice farming entail cascading effects in prey–predator interactions across ecosystem boundaries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2273-2282, September 2025.
These results show that introducing multiple drainage periods in rice fields (i.e. AWD) indirectly hampers terrestrial spider reproduction through limiting the emergence of potential preys from the aquatic to terrestrial boundaries. MSD resulted in a more conciliatory strategy as it largely reduces methane emissions and does not affect predator–prey ...
