Perceptually Prioritized Bit-Plane Coding for High-Definition Advanced Audio Coding

Eighth IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (ISM'06), 2006
Wide bitrate range scalability is now the latest trend in audio coding. A lot of efforts has been devoted to the development of algorithms for more efficient scalable audio coder that scales from very low bitrate. Scalable audio coding technique such as MPEG-4 Scalable Lossless coding (SLS) offers a unified solution for high-compression perceptual ...

Perceptual zerotrees for scalable wavelet coding of wideband audio

1999 IEEE Workshop on Speech Coding Proceedings. Model, Coders, and Error Criteria (Cat. No.99EX351), 2003
This paper introduces a new algorithm for scalable coding of wideband audio signals. The technique is based on quantization of bi-orthogonal wavelet transformed coefficients using a perceptual zerotree method. An initial zerotree estimate of the wavelet coefficients is computed, followed by scalar quantization of the coefficients according to ...

Understanding perceptual distortion in MPEG scalable audio coding

IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, 2005
In this paper, we study coding artifacts in MPEG-compressed scalable audio. Specifically, we consider the MPEG advanced audio coder (AAC) using bit slice scalable arithmetic coding (BSAC) as implemented in the MPEG-4 reference software. First we perform human subjective testing using the comparison category rating (CCR) approach, quantitatively ...

Phase Randomization-A new concept in Perceptual Audio Coding

TENCON 2006 - 2006 IEEE Region 10 Conference, 2006
A novel technique of Phase Randomization (PR) for bit rate reduction in perceptual coding of high quality audio is presented. Instead of actual phase information, the decoder utilizes nevertheless?carefully?formulated `random' phase information for signal reconstruction with the help of a code sent by the encoder in every frame of data.

IntMDCT - A link between perceptual and lossless audio coding

IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing, 2002
The Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) is widely used in modem perceptual audio coding schemes. In this paper we present an integer approximation of this lapped transform, called IntMDCT, which is derived from the MDCT using the lifting scheme. This reversible integer transform inherits most of the attractive properties of the MDCT, exhibiting a

Enhancing the Quality of Coded Audio Using Perceptual Criteria

2005 IEEE 7th Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing, 2005
Code excited linear predictive (CELP) coding standards often fail to properly represent non-speech signals because they are inherently optimized for speech. Most modern CELP coders include provisions for the inclusion of indirect perceptual criteria to counteract this problem; however no direct psychoacoustic models are employed.

Objective Quality Assessment of Perceptually Coded Audio Signals

2023

Transform coding of audio signals using perceptual noise criteria

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1988
A 4-b/sample transform coder is designed using a psychoacoustically derived noise-making threshold that is based on the short-term spectrum of the signal. The coder has been tested in a formal subjective test involving a wide selection of monophonic audio inputs. The signals used in the test were of 15-kHz bandwidth, sampled at 32 kHz.

Wideband Speech and Audio Coding in the Perceptual Domain

2005
A new critical band auditory filterbank with superior auditory masking properties is proposed and is applied to wideband speech and audio coding. The analysis and synthesis are performed in the perceptual domain using this filterbank. The outputs of the analysis filters are processed to obtain a series of pulse trains that represent neural firing ...
