Priming effects in picture fragment completion: Support for the perceptual closure hypothesis.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1990The perceptual closure hypothesis says that priming will be optimum when just enough information is available in the prime to support closure. Across 5 experiments, a moderately complete fragmented image (Level 4) produced more priming than an almost complete (Level 7) or a very incomplete (Level 1) fragmented image.

The computation of perceptual structure from collinearity and closure: Normality and pathology
Neuropsychologia, 1992Three experiments tested how structural information affects the processing of fragmented forms, using evidence from both normal subjects and an agnosic patient. The stimuli were either (a) outline drawings of objects; (b) "well" or "poorly" structured fragmented forms derived from outline drawings (Experiments 1 and 2) or (c) "well" or "poorly ...

Robust Loop Closure Selection for Multi-robot Mapping Under Perceptual Aliasing
2019 19th International Conference on Control, Automation and Systems (ICCAS), 2019Robust loop closure detection is crucial in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) as failure to correctly choose the loop closures can severely distort the map. This applies not only to single-robot cases but also for multi-robot systems. When initial relative poses between robots are unknown, inter-robot loop closures must be found in order to ...

Performance of Subjects with Reading Disabilities on a Series of Perceptual Closure Tasks
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1974Previous research has suggested that individuals who have reading disabilities often have difficulty in perceiving and organizing abstract or ambiguous stimuli. A series of perceptual closure tasks were designed to test two hypotheses: (a) Ss with reading disabilities will give fewer correct responses to the closure tasks and (b) Ss with reading ...

Individual differences in perceptual closure at the phoneme level
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1997The amount of acoustic information available from the speech signal was reduced by removing all regions of the waveform in which the rms amplitude fell below a threshold value. This removal was accomplished by envelope center clipping followed by attenuation and envelope expansion.

The role of perceptual grouping and the encoding of closure of local elements in the processing of hierarchical patterns was studied. Experiments 1 and 2 showed a global advantage over the local level for 2 tasks involving the discrimination of orientation and closure, but there was a local advantage for the closure discrimination task relative to the ...

The Relationship between "Intolerance of Ambiguity," Generalization and Speed of Perceptual Closure
Child Development, 1957The concept of "intolerance of ambiguity" was introduced by FrenkelBrunswick as a unifying term for a number of response characteristics of prejudiced individuals. Some of the subjects in a study of social attitudes (0o) were observed to be unable to accept ambivalent feelings toward their parents or other individuals.

The present study investigated Gestalt principles of proximity, similarity and closure. 32 subjects reproduced distances between dots and lines. Two stimulus exposure times were used. Time was significant for proximity, similarity, and closure. Type of distance estimated was significant for proximity and closure and the interaction of time and type of

Perceptual Rigidity and Closure Phenomenon as a Function of Manifest Anxiety in Children
Child Development, 1958An increasing number of investigations have been concerned with the psychological and behavioral correlates of the Taylor manifest anxiety scale (i9). The Taylor scale (MAS) is coordinated with the theoretical drive (D) variable in Hull's behavior theory; i.e., scores on the test presumably reflect variations in the emotional reactivity (drive) of the ...
