Perceptual load in sport and the heuristic value of the perceptual load paradigm in examining expertise-related perceptual-cognitive adaptations

Cognitive Processing, 2012
In two experiments, we transferred perceptual load theory to the dynamic field of team sports and tested the predictions derived from the theory using a novel task and stimuli. We tested a group of college students (N = 33) and a group of expert team sport players (N = 32) on a general perceptual load task and a complex, soccer-specific perceptual load

Animacy, perceptual load, and inattentional blindness

Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 2013
Inattentional blindness is the failure to notice unexpected objects in a visual scene while engaging in an attention-demanding task. We examined the effects of animacy and perceptual load on inattentional blindness. Participants searched for a category exemplar under low or high perceptual load.

Visual perceptual load modulates an auditory microreflex

Psychophysiology, 2009
AbstractThe postauricular reflex (PAR) is a vestigial microreflex evoked by an abrupt auditory onset. Previous studies have indicated that the PAR is unaffected by auditory selective attention. Here, we report that the PAR can be modulated by a crossmodal manipulation of attentional demands within the visual modality.

Cuing Interacts with Perceptual Load in Visual Search

Psychological Science, 2002
We tested the strong form of the perceptual-load hypothesis, which posits that the amount of perceptual load is the only factor determining whether attention can be effectively focused. Participants performed a visual search task under conditions of low and high load and with either a 100% valid spatial cue or no spatial cue. With no cue, participants

The role of perceptual load in visual awareness

Brain Research, 2006
Does awareness depend on attention? This is a fundamental issue for understanding the relationship of attention and awareness, yet previous research provided mixed results. Here, I describe new research that shows that the effects of attention on awareness depend on the level of perceptual load in the attended task.

Perceptual load in decision making: The role of anterior insula and visual areas. An ERP study.

Neuropsychologia, 2019
The present study aimed at describing the effects of perceptual load on neurocognitive processes of decision-making. To this aim, we used a visual-motor discriminative task in which pairs of stimuli were assigned to either target or non-target categories.

Naloxone reversed cognitive impairments induced by repeated morphine under heavy perceptual load in the 5‐choice serial reaction time task

Journal of Neuroscience Research, 2019
Repeated opioids abuse may produce long‐lasting and complicated cognitive deficits in individuals. Naloxone is a typical mu‐opioid receptor antagonist widely used in clinical treatment for opioid overdose and opioid abuse.

Perceptual load and attentional boost: A study of their interaction.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2014
Increasing attention to an item typically interferes with the ability to process other concurrent information. The attentional boost effect, however, appears to contradict the ubiquity of dual-task interference. Rather, detecting a target item for one task boosts memory for a currently presented, but unrelated background scene.

The Role of Perceptual Load in Processing Distractor Faces

Psychological Science, 2003
It has been established that successful ignoring of irrelevant distractors depends on the extent to which the current task loads attention. However, the previous load studies have typically employed neutral distractor stimuli (e.g., letters). In the experiments reported here, we examined whether the perception of irrelevant distractor faces would show

A NOTE ON THE MEASUREMENT OP PERCEPTUAL MOTOR LOAD

Ergonomics, 1964
This note describes a method of measuring the perceptual motor load (PML) of tasks in which activity is negligible, and the input and processing of perceptual data is the important thing.
