Psychoacoustic Considerations in Surround Sound with Height [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents recent research findings in the psychoacoustics of 3D multichannel sound recording and rendering. The addition of height channels in new reproduction formats such as Auro-3D, Dolby Atmos and 22.2, etc. enhances the perceived spatial

An Optoelectronic Memristor Based on Proton‐Involved Photoreduction for Bimodal Sensing, Memory, and Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
In this study, an optoelectronic memristor with integrated light/humidity bimodal sensing, memory, and processing functionalities is proposed. A proof of concept sensory–motion system with attention‐driven and relative humidity‐modulated behaviors is presented by sending the synaptic feedback of the memristor to a robot arm.

SQ-GAN: Semantic Image Communications Using Masked Vector Quantization [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This work introduces Semantically Masked VQ-GAN (SQ-GAN), a novel approach integrating generative models to optimize image compression for semantic/task-oriented communications. SQ-GAN employs off-the-shelf semantic semantic segmentation and a new specifically developed semantic-conditioned adaptive mask module (SAMM) to selectively encode semantically

Exploiting Consistency-Preserving Loss and Perceptual Contrast Stretching to Boost SSL-based Speech Enhancement [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Self-supervised representation learning (SSL) has attained SOTA results on several downstream speech tasks, but SSL-based speech enhancement (SE) solutions still lag behind. To address this issue, we exploit three main ideas: (i) Transformer-based masking generation, (ii) consistency-preserving loss, and (iii) perceptual contrast stretching (PCS).

Seguir adelante: A qualitative exploration of Latino farmworkers' work and nonwork resources

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Latino immigrant workers have been an exploited community within many dangerous workforces, but especially within the agricultural industry. They are a crucial population for the labor and economy of the U.S., yet Latino farmworkers report feeling expendable, discriminated against, and exposed to hazardous working conditions.

Enhancing Intelligibility for Generative Target Speech Extraction via Joint Optimization with Target Speaker ASR [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Target speech extraction (TSE) isolates the speech of a specific speaker from a multi-talker overlapped speech mixture. Most existing TSE models rely on discriminative methods, typically predicting a time-frequency spectrogram mask for the target speech.

Quality of Life of Families Who Have Children With Cornelia de Lange Syndrome in Brazil: Opportunities for Improvement

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This exploratory cross‐sectional study aimed to estimate the family quality of life (FQoL) among 70 Brazilian families with children with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS). Data were collected using sociodemographic and clinical data forms, the Barthel index for activities of daily living, and the Beach Center FQoL Scale, a 5‐point Likert tool
