Torpor‐assisted migration: Regular use of shallow torpor reduces rest‐phase energy expenditure for songbirds during migration

Migrating songbirds regularly use shallow torpor (up to 98% of birds for some species) to save energy (up to 42%) during inactive periods. This Ruby‐crowned Kinglet Corthylio calendula that was captured after a spring snowstorm highlights the value of being able to save energy when encountering unfavourable conditions.

Rising temperature non‐additively alters how different dimensions of biodiversity affect ecosystem‐scale processes

The authors distil how dimensions of biodiversity drive ecosystem processes with increasing temperature. Specifically, species physiology more greatly affected ecosystem primary production than did foraging behaviour, and physiology mediated non‐additive interactions with temperature.

Offshore wind farm avoidance by a discard‐feeding seabird is independent of local fishing activity

Fishing is not allowed within wind farms; therefore, discard‐feeding seabirds may appear to avoid wind farm areas. We found that most Lesser Black‐backed Gulls avoided the wind farm area, but not each individual in each period. Avoidance of the wind farm was not driven by fishing exclusion within its perimeter.

Relationship between spatial and social phenotypes in an avian scavenger

A method is applied to distinguish interaction rates that would be expected given animals' movements from those that exceed expected values due to incidental contact. The relationship between space use and both observed and non‐incidental social network position varies between social situations.
