A safe and effective method for long-term relief of renal obstruction is presented. This method has been successful in buying time for patients in stiuations in which other approaches are hazardous or more complex. Its use can be modified for short-term therapeutic drainage of the upper urinary tract.

The indications and techniques for percutaneous nephrostomy are described, the results are documented, and the effects of the procedure on the management of these patients are discussed.

Urology, 1982Abstract A left percutaneous nephrostomy was performed in a thirty-week-old fetus with bilateral ureteropelvic junction stenosis. The procedure is not indicated when obstructive uropathy is associated with other malformations. Renal junction preservation cannot as yet be assessed.

Percutaneous nephrostomy in pyonephrosis
Urologic Radiology, 1989A series of 76 pyonephrotic kidneys in 73 patients were drained by percutaneous nephrostomy (PN) tube and examined to evaluate the contribution of this technique to the treatment of pyonephrosis. In 71 patients, clinical symptoms disappeared 24-48 h after the procedure. Two patients died from sepsis subsequent to anuria and underlying malignancy.

Percutaneous nephrostomy and maintenance of nephrostomy drainage
Urology, 1984A simple method for percutaneous insertion of nephrostomy tubes is described. In our series of 47 patients there have been no failed attempts at nephrostomy placement, and only one complication, transient septicemia, was noted. Catheter care is described, and use of the nephrostomy tract for various urologic problems is discussed.
