Percutaneous nephrostomy — Technique

Urologic radiology, 1981
Percutaneous nephrostomy is increasingly used for temporary relief of upper urinary tract obstruction. The technique described involves the use of angiographic catheters and guides, and will provide drainage for several weeks or months. The patient is placed in the prone oblique position after intravenous contrast to opacify the kidneys.

Ultrasonically Guided Percutaneous Nephrostomy

Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology, 1990
Ultrasonically guided percutaneous nephrostomy was planned in 98 patients with a total of 128 nephrostomies. The success rate was over 90%. The catheters were maintained from a 1/2 day to 150 days with a median duration of 13 days. 26% of the patients had the catheter replaced, mainly because of displacement.

Percutaneous nephrostomy in utero

Urology, 1982

Percutaneous Nephrostomy

Acta Radiologica. Diagnosis, 1980
During a 6-year-period percutaneous nephrostomy has been used for supravesical urinary diversion in 115 patients and 132 individual kidneys. The procedure proved to be a safe and effective alternative to operative nephrostomy in patients with urinary obstruction but may be used also in other urologic conditions.

Percutaneous nephrostomy in pyonephrosis

Urologic Radiology, 1989
A series of 76 pyonephrotic kidneys in 73 patients were drained by percutaneous nephrostomy (PN) tube and examined to evaluate the contribution of this technique to the treatment of pyonephrosis. In 71 patients, clinical symptoms disappeared 24-48 h after the procedure. Two patients died from sepsis subsequent to anuria and underlying malignancy.

Percutaneous U-Loop Nephrostomy

Journal of Urology, 1979
Single-tube nephrostomy drainage can be converted to U-loop drainage using percutaneous methods. Because only local anesthesia is required the technique can be used for patients who are poor operative risks.
