The number of osseointegrated dental implants is increasing. Healthy peri-implant soft and hard tissues are required for the stability and survival of dental implants. In this paper we review factors that lead to peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, and review treatment.

The risk of developing peri-implantitis seems to be more pronounced in patients with a history of periodontitis. Pretreatment to eliminate periodontal pathogens from the patient's oral cavity before dental implant treatment therefore is important to reduce the risk of peri-implantitis.
