A 51-year-old woman underwent elective cardiac surgery for the closure of an atrial septal defect. The surgery was uneventful and the patient was making good progress. On postoperative day 6, she developed shortness of breath, tachycardia and raised jugular venous pressure.

The risk of pericardiocentesis
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1979The risk and potential risk factors of pericardiocentesis were assessed by a review of a series of 52 pericardiocenteses comprising all those performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory of one institution from 1971 to 1978. On the basis of the operative results, the patients were separated into two groups for comparison; Group I comprised all ...

Pericardiocentesis versus window formation in malignant pericardial effusion: trends and outcomes
HeartObjectives Malignant pericardial effusion (MPE) in patients with cancer is associated with poor prognosis. This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes in patients with cancer who underwent pericardiocentesis versus pericardial window formation. Methods

A Novel, Reusable, Ultrasound‐Guided Pericardiocentesis Simulation Model
Journal of ultrasound in medicine, 2020Given the rarity of emergency pericardiocentesis, deliberate effort must be made by the physician to maintain competence in performing this procedure.

Purpose: Pericardial effusion in patients who have recently undergone cardiac surgery is often trapped in compartments. CT of the pericardium provides good information about the distribution of pericardial fluid in the postoperative period after cardiac surgery.

Ultrasound Guidance for Pericardiocentesis
Acta Radiologica, 1991Sonographic guidance with 41 punctures and 38 catheterizations was employed in 68 patients. The approach was either intercostal or subxiphoid. Most punctures were performed with a 1.4-mm-thick plastic-sheathed cannula after local anesthesia. Complications were observed in 7 patients.

Pericardiocentesis – How to do it
Heart, Lung and Circulation, 2015Pericardiocentesis is an important diagnostic and therapeutic technique, with the potential for significant morbidity and mortality if performed incorrectly. This article attempts to cover the anatomy, preparation, and techniques necessary to successfully perform pericardiocentesis.

THE ELECTROCARDIOGRAM AS A SAFEGUARD IN PERICARDIOCENTESIS
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1956• Damage to the myocardium during pericardial paracentesis has occasionally been severe enough to result in pericardial tamponade and death. Anamil experiments here described showed that contact of the tip of the needle with the myocardium could be detected electrocardiographically if the needle was connected in such a way as to constitute an exploring

Pericardiocentesis, the percutaneous drainage of the pericardial effusion, is the technique of choice for the treatment of cardiac tamponade. In addition, it could be useful for diagnostic purposes in specific situations. The pericardial puncture could be associated to serious complications and as it could be performed in a wide variety of clinical ...
