Hydrochemical Characteristics of Four Retreating Glacier Forefields Off the Coast of Admiralty Bay (King George Island, Maritime Antarctic): Diverse Sources of Metals and Metalloids

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 4, Page 1330-1352, 28 February 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of geological, marine and anthropogenic sources on metal and metalloid concentrations in the forefields of four glaciers (Ecology, Sphinx, Tower and Windy) on King George Island, Antarctic. Water samples were collected at the beginning and end of the hydrological season (austral summer, December 2021 to February ...

Carbon and nitrogen pools in thermokarst-affected permafrost landscapes in Arctic Siberia [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2018
Ice-rich yedoma-dominated landscapes store considerable amounts of organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) and are vulnerable to degradation under climate warming.

Temporal and spatial variation in active layer depth in the McMurdo Sound Region, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A soil climate monitoring network, consisting of seven automated weather stations, was established between 1999 and 2003, ranging from Minna Bluff to Granite Harbour and from near sea level to about 1700m on the edge of the polar plateau.

Hydrogravimetry Enables Quantification of Alpine Groundwater Dynamics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract Groundwater plays a critical role in the functioning of alpine hydrological systems, and its importance is expected to increase under climate change. However, quantification of groundwater processes in these systems remains highly uncertain. Terrestrial time‐lapse gravimetry (TLG) is a geophysical and geodetic technique whose measured variable

Cryogenic fracturing of calcite flowstone in caves: theoretical considerations and field observations in Kents Cavern, Devon, UK

open access: yesInternational Journal of Speleology, 2012
Several caves in Devon, England, have been noted for extensive cracking of substantial flowstone floors. Conjectural explanations have included earthquake damage, local shock damage from collapsing cave passages, hydraulic pressure, and cryogenic ...

Postglacial talus slope development imaged by the ERT method: comparison of slopes from SW Spitsbergen, Norway and Tatra Mountains, Poland

open access: yesOpen Geosciences, 2019
Talus slopes are a common sedimentary formation both in polar and high-mountain areas, but their development is still not sufficiently understood. This article discusses the environmental factors that have been influencing development of talus slopes ...

Palaeoglacier reconstruction and dynamics of Cordillera Vilcanota in the tropical high Peruvian Andes

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 2, February 2026.
We provide a geomorphological analysis of Cordillera Vilcanota and use morphostratigraphic principles to reconstruct palaeo icefield extent and palaeoglacier readvances, likely during the Antarctic Cold Reversal and Younger Dryas. We find evidence of temperate and polythermal ice margins, with limited glaciofluvial landform generation.

Periglaciology: Review and Discussion of Modern Concepts and its Relation to the Research in Poland

open access: yesQuaestiones Geographicae
This paper describes the foundations of the periglacial concept beginning from the introduction of this term by Łoziński in 1909 and 1912. Its etymology along with the meaning and definitions that change over time are analysed in the present paper ...

An inventory of rock glaciers in the central British Columbia Coast Mountains, Canada, from high resolution Google Earth imagery

open access: yesArctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research, 2018
Little is known about the presence, distribution, age, or activity of rock glaciers in the British Columbia Coast Mountains of western Canada. Reflecting debris accumulation and mass wasting under a periglacial climate, these rock glaciers describe a ...
