Biomaterials Used for Periodontal Disease Treatment: Focusing on Immunomodulatory Properties [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biomaterials, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
The growing use of biomaterials with different therapeutic purposes increases the need for their physiological understanding as well as to seek its integration with the human body. Chronic inflammatory local pathologies, generally associated with infectious or autoimmunity processes, have been a current therapeutic target due to the difficulty in their

Aesthetics and Patient‐Reported Outcomes in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry: Consensus Report [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, Volume 52, Issue 9, Page 1222-1244, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Aesthetics and patient‐reported experiences (PREs) and outcomes (PROs) influence treatment choices, but have been largely overlooked in periodontology and implant dentistry. This consensus conference evaluated these factors by focusing on gingival recession defects (GRDs), immediate or early/delayed implant placement and peri ...

Herpesvirus Simplex Virus‐1 Exploits Inflammation to Infect Periodontal Stem Cells and Disrupt Lineage Commitment [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Periodontal Research, Volume 60, Issue 12, Page 1265-1279, December 2025.
HSV‐1 infects oral mesenchymal stem cells both in vitro and in vivo to dysregulate their lineage commitment. An inflamed gingival environment increases susceptibility to HSV‐1 infection, which further elevates proinflammatory cytokine levels and exacerbates alveolar bone loss.

Narrow diameter titanium–zirconium tissue‐level implants supporting multi‐unit FDPs in the anterior area: A 5‐year prospective study

open access: yesClinical Oral Implants Research, Volume 34, Issue 7, Page 751-767, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Narrow diameter implants (NDIs) are used in cases of limited mesio‐distal space, or if the alveolar ridge does not allow placement of a standard diameter implant. Purpose The aim of this prospective case series study is to present the 5‐year clinical‐, radiological‐, and patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) of patients with ...

Prevention and treatment of peri‐implant diseases—The EFP S3 level clinical practice guideline

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, Volume 50, Issue S26, Page 4-76, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Background The recently published Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the treatment of stages I–IV periodontitis provided evidence‐based recommendations for treating periodontitis patients, defined according to the 2018 classification. Peri‐implant diseases were also re‐defined in the 2018 classification.

Downregulation of miRNA‐26 in chronic periodontitis interferes with innate immune responses and cell migration by targeting phospholipase C beta 1

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 102-113, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim To evaluate the potential role of miR‐26 family members in periodontal pathogenesis by assessing innate immune responses to periopathic bacteria and regulation of cytoskeletal organization. Materials and Methods Expression of miR‐26a‐5p and miR‐26b‐5p was quantified in gingival biopsies derived from healthy and periodontally diseased ...

Ibero‐Panamerican Federation of Periodontics Delphi study on the trends in diagnosis and treatment of peri‐implant diseases and conditions: A Latin American consensus

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, Volume 92, Issue 12, Page 1697-1718, December 2021., 2021
Abstract Background The social diversity, heterogeneous culture, and inherent economic inequality factors in Latin America (LA) justify conducting a comprehensive analysis on the current status and future trends of peri‐implant diseases and conditions. Thus, the aim of this Delphi study was to predict the future trends in the diagnosis and treatment of

IL‐23/IL‐17 axis and soluble receptors isoforms sIL‐23R and sIL‐17RA in patients with rheumatoid arthritis‐presenting periodontitis

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, Volume 35, Issue 9, September 2021., 2021
Blood sample was taken to obtain plasma from all study participants. IL‐23, IL‐23R, IL‐17A, and IL‐17RA were detected with ELISA technique. Results: (a) The sIL‐23R levels were found lower in the RAP group and IL‐23 levels were increased. (b) IL‐17A was lower in the P and RAP group but not in RA patients.

Treatment of Miller I Mandibular Gingival Recessions Using PRF vs. Connective Graft

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dentistry, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Gingival recession (GR) can cause aesthetic and functional problems. Using connective tissue graft (CTG) and coronally advanced flap (CAF) is considered the technique of choice for treating GR. Considering the morbidity resulting from taking CTG, different alternative biomaterials have been described, including plasma‐rich fibrin (PRF) membrane ...
