The Formal Inverse of the Period-Doubling Sequence [PDF]

open access: yesCoRR, 2018
If $p$ is a prime number, consider a $p$-automatic sequence $(u_n)_{n\ge 0}$, and let $U(X) = \sum_{n\ge 0} u_n X^n \in \mathbb{F}_p[[X]]$ be its generating function. Assume that there exists a formal power series $V(X) = \sum_{n\ge 0} v_n X^n \in \mathbb{F}_p[[X]]$ which is the compositional inverse of $U$, i.e., $U(V(X))=X=V(U(X))$.

On the automaticity of sequences defined by the Thue–Morse and period-doubling Stieltjes continued fractions [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Number Theory, 2020
Continued fraction expansions of automatic numbers have been extensively studied during the last few decades. The research interests are, on one hand, in the degree or automaticity of the partial quotients following the seminal paper of Baum and Sweet in 1976, and on the other hand, in calculating the Hankel determinants and irrationality exponents, as

Sequence of Routes to Chaos in a Lorenz-Type System

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2020
This paper reports a new bifurcation pattern observed in a Lorenz-type system. The pattern is composed of a main bifurcation route to chaos (n=1) and a sequence of sub-bifurcation routes with n=3,4,5,…,14 isolated sub-branches to chaos.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos in Conformational Changes of Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2022
From enzyme binding to robot grasping, the function of many mechanical systems depends upon large, coordinated motions of their components. Such motions arise from a network of physical interactions in the form of links (edges) that transmit forces ...

A SO2 flux study of the Etna volcano 2020–2021 paroxysmal sequences

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2023
The persistent open-vent degassing of Mt. Etna is often punctuated by months-long paroxysmal sequences characterized by episodes of violent Strombolian to lava fountaining activity.

The analogue of overlap-freeness for the period-doubling sequence

open access: yesCoRR, 2023
Good words are binary words avoiding factors 11 and 1001, and patterns 0000 and 00010100. We show that good words bear the same relationship to the period-doubling sequence that overlap-free words bear to the Thue-Morse sequence. We prove an analogue of Fife's Theorem for good words, exhibit the lexicographically least and greatest infinite good words,

Disability pension dynamics in early adulthood: A two-decade longitudinal study of educational, work and welfare-state trajectories in Norway

open access: yesSSM: Population Health, 2022
Background: Since the 1990's, structural transformations in the Norwegian economy have decreased employment opportunities for low-skilled young people lacking formal education credentials.

A New Feigenbaum-Like Chaotic 3D System

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2014
Based on Sprott N system, a new three-dimensional autonomous system is reported. It is demonstrated to be chaotic in the sense of having positive largest Lyapunov exponent and fractional dimension. To further understand the complex dynamics of the system,

Quantifying the Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior of the DC-DC Converter via Permutation Entropy

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Quantifying nonlinear dynamic behaviors, such as bifurcation and chaos, in nonlinear systems are currently being investigated. In this paper, permutation entropy is used to characterize these complex phenomena in nonlinear direct current-direct current ...
