Spectral and Microscopic Behavior of Type III Femtosecond Fiber Bragg Gratings at High Temperatures

open access: yesMicromachines
Fiber Bragg gratings are key components for optical fiber sensing applications in harsh environments. Microvoids, or so-called type III fiber Bragg gratings, fabricated using femtosecond lasers and the point-by-point technique, were characterized at high

Solvent‐Free Bonding Mechanisms and Microstructure Engineering in Dry Electrode Technology for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dry electrode technology revolutionizes battery manufacturing by eliminating toxic solvents and energy‐intensive drying. This work details two promising techniques: dry spray deposition and polymer fibrillation. How their unique solvent‐free bonding mechanisms create uniform microstructures for thicker, denser electrodes, boosting energy density and ...

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

Roll‐to‐Roll Mechanical Exfoliation for Large‐Area van der Waals Films with Preserved Crystallographic Alignment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A roll‐to‐roll exfoliation method is demonstrated that preserves the crystallographic alignment of anisotropic 2D materials over large areas, enabling scalable fabrication of directional electronic and optoelectronic devices. Abstract Anisotropic 2D materials such as black phosphorus (BP), GeS or CrSBr, exhibit direction‐dependent optical and ...

Atomically Revealing Bulk Point Defect Dynamics in Hydrogen‐Driven γ‐Fe2O3 → Fe3O4 → FeO Transformation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ TEM uncovers the atomic‐scale mechanisms underlying hydrogen‐driven γ‐Fe2O3→Fe3O4→FeO reduction. In γ‐Fe2O3, oxygen vacancies cluster around intrinsic Fe vacancies, leading to nanopore formation, whereas in Fe3O4, vacancy aggregation is suppressed, preserving a dense structure.

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Formation and growth mechanism of the α2 lath within the γ phase in high Nb containing TiAl alloy

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
A high Nb containing TiAl alloy exhibiting near fully lamellar microstructure with nano-lamellar spacing was obtained via heat treatment. The lamellar structure exhibits an average spacing of approximately 75 nm and comprises both γ/α₂ and γ/γ interfaces.

Diffusion of a single-phase fluid through a general deterministic partially-fissured medium

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2014
The sigma convergence method was introduced by G. Nguetseng for studying deterministic homogenization problems beyond the periodic setting and extended by him to the case of deterministic homogenization in general deterministic perforated domains ...
