Laser Interference Lithography—A Method for the Fabrication of Controlled Periodic Structures

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
A microstructure determines macro functionality. A controlled periodic structure gives the surface specific functions such as controlled structural color, wettability, anti-icing/frosting, friction reduction, and hardness enhancement.

A Numerical Investigation of the Influence of the Material Microstructure on the Failure Mode of Metal Ceramic Composites

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2016
Metal failure is often initiated by strain localization in narrow bands. In metal matrix composites, the occurrence and the consequences of this phenomenon are influenced by the material microstructure.

Wang tiling aided statistical determination of the Representative Volume Element size of random heterogeneous materials

open access: yes, 2018
Wang tile based representation of a heterogeneous material facilitates fast synthesis of non-periodic microstructure realizations. In this paper, we apply the tiling approach in numerical homogenization to determine the Representative Volume Element size

Homogenization in magnetic-shape-memory polymer composites

open access: yes, 2017
Magnetic-shape-memory materials (e.g. specific NiMnGa alloys) react with a large change of shape to the presence of an external magnetic field. As an alternative for the difficult to manifacture single crystal of these alloys we study composite materials

Atomic size oscillations in conductance histograms for gold nanowires and the influence of work hardening [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Nanowires of different nature have been shown to self-assemble as a function of stress at the contact between two macroscopic metallic leads. Here we demonstrate for gold wires that the balance between various metastable nanowire configurations is ...

PERIODIC WAVES IN MICROSTRUCTURED SOLIDS AND INVERSE PROBLEMS

open access: yesMathematical Modelling and Analysis, 2012
Conditions for the existence of periodic and solitary waves in 1D microstructured solid of Mindlin type are deduced. Inverse problems to determine material properties are solved.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Periodic Microstructures Fabricated by Laser Interference with Subsequent Etching [PDF]

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2020
Periodic nanostructures have wide applications in micro-optics, bionics, and optoelectronics. Here, a laser interference with subsequent etching technology is proposed to fabricate uniform periodic nanostructures with controllable morphologies and smooth surfaces on hard materials. One-dimensional microgratings with controllable periods (1, 2, and 3 μm)

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Auxetic two-dimensional lattice with Poisson's Ratio arbitrarily close to -1

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we propose a new lattice structure having macroscopic Poisson's ratio arbitrarily close to the stability limit -1. We tested experimentally the effective Poisson's ratio of the micro-structured medium; the uniaxial test has been performed ...
