Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Unlocking the Power of Quercetin‐Encapsulated Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles: A Multifunctional Approach to Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) are investigated for bone regeneration given their remarkable structural and functional properties. MBGNs are functionalized with Mn and Cu and incorporated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid exhibiting antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Neper-Mosaic: Seamless generation of periodic representative volume elements on unit domains

open access: yesSoftwareX
The effective macroscopic behaviour of a material is a manifestation of the underlying microstructure and microscale processes. This renders the generation of highly accurate digital microstructure twins indispensable for multiscale simulations.

Exceptional thermoelectric properties of flexible organic−inorganic hybrids with monodispersed and periodic nanophase

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The potential of flexible organic/inorganic hybrids for thermoelectrics is limited by the inability to control their microstructure. Here, the authors demonstrate polymer-nanoparticle hybrids with a monodispersed, periodic nanophase that shows high ...

Two-scale convergence for locally-periodic microstructures and homogenization of plywood structures

open access: yes, 2012
The introduced notion of locally-periodic two-scale convergence allows to average a wider range of microstructures, compared to the periodic one. The compactness theorem for the locally-periodic two-scale convergence and the characterisation of the limit

Design of tunable acoustic metamaterials with periodic piezoelectric microstructure [PDF]

open access: yesExtreme Mechanics Letters, 2020
An innovative special class of tunable periodic metamaterials is designed, suitable for realising high-performance acoustic filters. The metamaterial is made up of a phononic crystal coupled to local resonators. Such local resonators consist of masses enclosed into piezoelectric rings, shunted by either dissipative or non-dissipative electrical circuit.

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

Bone microstructure and atomic periodic disharmonization in osteoporosis [PDF]

open access: yesUniversa Medicina, 2012
Background Both cortical and cancellous bone display a complex, porous microstructure whose properties depend on the macrostructure of bone as well as age and health of the individual.

Hybrid Auxetic Architectures: Integrating Curvature‐Driven Design for Enhanced Mechanical Tunability and Structural Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Curvature‐tuned auxetic lattices are designed, fabricated, and mechanically characterized to reveal how geometric curvature governs stretchability, stress redistribution, and Poisson's ratio evolution. Photoelastic experiments visualize stress pathways, while hyperelastic simulations quantify deformation mechanics.
