Nonsurgical periodontal therapy
Clinical Techniques in Small Animal Practice, 2000The primary etiology of periodontal disease is bacterial infection. Bacteria exist as a biofilm (plaque) on the tooth and soft-tissue surfaces of the mouth. Biofilm is extremely resistant to antimicrobial activity. To effectively treat periodontal disease, the bacterial load must be reduced to allow healing of the inflamed tissues.

Periodontal Therapy: Prospects for the Future
Journal of Periodontology, 1993Prior to the 1950s, periodontitis was treated mostly by tooth exfoliation or extraction, and that is still the predominant treatment for most of the world's populations today. Debridement of the root surface by scaling and root planing came into relatively common use in the first half of the present century and has become the central feature held in ...

Photodynamic therapy: a targeted therapy in periodontics
Australian Dental Journal, 2009AbstractThe oral cavity is colonized by a large number and highly diversified communities of micro‐organisms. Bacterial biofilm present on tooth or root surface is a major cause of gingivitis and periodontitis. Chemical antimicrobial agents are widely used in prophylactic and therapeutic regimens for dental plaque related diseases, which are among the ...

Minimally Invasive Periodontal Therapy: Will Periodontal Therapy Remain a Technologic Laggard?
Journal of Periodontology, 2010Minimally invasive therapeutic approaches have become the standard of care for many medical procedures. In contrast, the use of minimally invasive techniques in non‐surgical and surgical periodontal therapy has not progressed to the same extent. This commentary explores some of the technologic forces that influence the acceptance of minimally invasive ...

Cellular therapy in periodontal regeneration
Periodontology 2000, 2019AbstractPeriodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition leading to destruction of the tooth supporting tissues, which if left untreated may cause tooth loss. The treatment of periodontitis mainly aims to arrest the inflammatory process by infection control measures, although in some specific lesions a limited periodontal regeneration can also be ...

Effects of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on periodontitis in humans
Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 1983Abstract. Root planing is an effective method of treating both moderate and severe periodontitis. Predictable and significant improvements in bleeding scores, probing pocket depths and probing attachment levels have been demonstrated by a number of different research groups. Significant positive changes in the subgingival microflora are induced. These
